This season’s finalists came down to the three head coaches of the Detroit Pistons, San Antonio Spurs and Boston Celtics. But in the end, Boston’s very own would edge out Johnson and Bickerstaff for this honor. Yes, Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla is the 2025-26 NBA Coach of the Year.
A global media panel of 100 voters selected the 2025-26 NBA Coach of the Year. Joe received 62 First Place Votes, 24 Second Place Votes and 10 Third Place Votes. Detroit’s J.B. Bickerstaff received 29 First Place Votes and while San Antonio’s Mitch Johnson received just nine First Place Votes.
Mazzulla is joining some great company when it comes to the history of the Boston franchise. Joe is now the fourth Celtics coach to win the Red Auerbach Trophy. Following in the path and footsteps of the legendary Red Auerbach himself, Tommy Heinsohn as well as Bill Fitch.
On learning of his achievement and coaching accolade, Mazzulla released the following statement. He says,
“Thank you to the Lord for the platform he has given me, and to my wife and family who support me on this journey. Thank you to our players who compete and give it everything they have each night. I am grateful for every member of the Celtics organization whose dedication impacts winning every day. This award belongs to our staff, who are there for the guys every day. Their relentless work ethic improves our team daily. This award should be named Staff of the Year.”
While the postseason may not have gone the way the Celtics had hoped or wanted. What Joe was able to accomplish with Boston with injuries during the regular season is what matters.

The NBA reveals, “Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla has been named the 2025-26 NBA Coach of the Year, earning the Red Auerbach Trophy. Joe Mazzulla is the first Celtics head coach to win the NBA Coach of the Year Award since Bill Fitch in 1979-80 and the fourth in franchise history, a group that also includes Red Auerbach (1964-65) and Tom Heinsohn (1972-73).
