Lakers Austin Reaves to Sign Four-Year $185 Million Max Contract
During the draft we hear 60 names called out over the course of two days. However, if a young athlete isn’t selected or bets on himself to go elsewhere; this doesn’t mean it’s the end of the road. Case in point, LA’s Austin Reaves. A player that just got extended after going through the entire draft in 2021 with all but one team passing on him. Well, he’s getting the payday he always wanted. Los Angeles Lakers star Austin Reaves intends to sign a four-year $185 million maximum contract to return to the franchise, with a player option for the final season in 2029-30.
Austin did things his way, going his own path. Reaves contract extension is certainly cementing his legacy. Austin is landing the richest contract for an undrafted player in NBA history. And he proves that sometimes you have to take chances and believe in your own abilities and talent.
Reaves entered the NBA as an undrafted free agent in 2021. He actually was going to be drafted late in the draft but went in a different direction. After declining to be selected by the Detroit Pistons with the 42nd overall pick he elected for free agency. Doing so in order to ensure he could sign with a preferred team; he would eventually join the Los Angeles Lakers on a two-way contract.

Los Angeles Lakers star Austin Reaves intends to sign a four-year, $185 million maximum contract to return to the franchise, with a player option for the final season in 2029-30, sources tell ESPN. Reaves declined his $14.9M player option for the new max deal.
The Lakers and Reaves’ agents, Aaron Reilly and Reggie Berry of AMR Agency, worked through discussions over the last 10 days after teams were able to negotiate with their own free agents. Reaves lands the richest contract for an undrafted player in NBA history.
Reaves was expected to receive free-agent interest from multiple teams — such as Detroit — on maximum-level salary, so the Lakers stepped up on Wednesday to lock in their homegrown talent. Reaves went from undrafted to a two-way player — to making the Lakers roster and now multiple lucrative deals in L.A.”
Los Angeles now has Austin locked in to continue to play with Luka Doncic. Furthermore, the Reaves agreement has no impact on the Lakers cap flexibility this summer. According to Bobby Marks of ESPN, “The Lakers projected room takes into account Reaves $20.9M cap hold. He will sign last after the Lakers exhaust room. $41.3M in the first year.”
