Their latest move will add another defensive element and threat to the roster. The Los Angeles Lakers and free agent forward Matisse Thybulle have agreed on a one-year $3.3 million contract.
As reported late last week, around last Thursday; the Lakers had launched their pursuit of Matisse Thybulle and they have now struck deals to add both Thybulle and Ziaire Williams to their wing rotation. ESPN’s NBA insider Shams Charania confirmed the news regarding Thybulle Monday afternoon stating,
“Free agent forward Matisse Thybulle has agreed on one-year, $3.3 million contract with the Los Angeles Lakers, sources tell ESPN.
Thybulle, a two-time All-Defense team member, spoke with JJ Redick and Luka Doncic about the Lakers desire to sign him and his role during free agency and chose the opportunity on Monday. Thybulle shot 41.8% from 3 over the last two years across 45 games — and led the NBA in steals and deflections per 36 minutes last season among players to play at least 20 contests, per ESPN Research.”
How does Thybulle’s contract impact Los Angeles? Well, if Matisse Thybulle’s contract is fully guaranteed (which is most likely); the Lakers will have 16 fully guaranteed standard contracts on their books. This means that LA will have to engage in a little bit of trimming. They will need to waive/stretch or trade at least one fully guaranteed player.

However, the franchise has some time on their hands to think this matter over. So then, they can take a moment to decide and discuss what will be best for the team during the upcoming 2026-2027 season. The Lakers have until opening night in late October to explore trades to trim the roster.
Nonetheless, Thybulle will hit the cap at the veteran minimum amount of $2.5M for this season. Matisse Thybulle has averaged 4.8 steals + blocks per-36 minutes over the past three years. It’s been a long time since the Lakers had an impactful wing defender like Thybulle, but health is the biggest question; with Matisse playing in only 45% of games since 2023-24.
