LeBron James Informed Lakers Would Not Return for 2026-2027 Season—Playing Elsewhere
The divorce is final. After over half a decade together and a championship title; the NBA’s all-time leading scorer and Los Angeles are parting ways. LeBron James informed the Lakers that he would not return for the 2026-2027 season and would be playing elsewhere.
LA had made it known to James that they wanted him back. However, after much contemplation LeBron has decided to say goodbye to the purple and gold. Rumors have been heavily swirling and circulating regarding a potential landing spot for LeBron.
On Monday, Draymond Green declined his $27.7 million player option to become a free agent. This move would provide the Warriors flexibility to pursue LeBron James in free agency as well as Anthony Davis via trade to form a Big 4. While the AD scenario has cooled, LeBron to the Bay remains strong and has not loss steam. But… the Cleveland Cavaliers also plan to throw their hat into the ring.

ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on the LeBron James departure from the Los Angeles Lakers. He mentions,
“BREAKING: LeBron James will continue his NBA career for the 2026-27 season and has informed the Los Angeles Lakers that the franchise can move on without him because he will play elsewhere, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul tells ESPN.
After eight seasons with the Lakers, including leading the franchise to the 2020 NBA championship, James departs and enters free agency set to join a new team.
Lakers president Rob Pelinka and Rich Paul spoke a short time ago about the four-time champion’s plans, sources said. James chose to inform the Lakers well before start of free agency tonight out of courtesy and appreciation for their run together, and to allow LA to conduct its offseason business.
The Lakers expressed to James that they wanted him back, but the NBA’s all-time leading scorer decides to move on elsewhere.”
In other LA news, Lakers guard Marcus Smart has declined his $5.4 million player option and will become a free agent. The Houston Rockets have significant interest in Smart and are expected to work out a deal in the three-year, $21 million range that would reunite him with head coach Ime Udoka. Such a deal would fall within the taxpayer mid-level exception threshold.
