Karl Bushby—British Man Returning to UK After 28 Years of Walking Around the World

A British man who spent 28 years walking 36,000 miles around the World is almost home. Karl Bushby left Chile in 1998 and is almost at his mother’s front gate, 29 countries and several swims later. While cinema may remember the long walk of Forest Gump, in real life, Karl Bushby is the British man returning to the UK after 28 years of walking around the world.

Bushby’s long, arduous journey has a name. He calls it the Goliath Expedition. Karl undertook this many-decades in the making adventure to be the first human in history to walk an unbroken path around the globe. It has not been easy. But Karl is right at the finish line.

Karl Bushby set off from Punta Arenas, Chile, in November 1998 to complete the Goliath Expedition. An unbroken, continuous walk around the world back to his home in Hull, England. Bound by two strict self-imposed rules. To never use any form of transportation to advance his route and never break the continuous footstep path back home. At the start, Karl estimated the journey would take about eight years. Less than a decade.

Pushing a heavy gear cart called “The Beast,” he set off across South, Central, and North America. Facing extreme conditions ranging from scorching deserts to dangerous terrain like the Darién Gap. As the decades unfolded, the trek stretched far past his original timeline. All due to harsh environments, geopolitical conflicts, strict border controls, and visa complications.

However, Karl continues to demonstrate what can be accomplished with just two feet. Bushby has covered roughly 50,000 km (31,068 miles) across 29 countries. He’s crossed the frozen Bering Strait, survived some of the world’s most difficult terrain, and even swam across the Caspian Sea. To reach Britain, he had to swim the English Channel for about 20 hours over three days.

But in almost a slight Interstellar moment, is the true realization of time. Time rolls on and the world keeps turning. Bushby was in his 20’s when his Goliath Expedition commenced. Now? He is 57. Karl has missed out on a lot.

While there are those that are in awe of his accomplishment. There are others who feel it shouldn’t have occurred at the expense of his family. Karl had a son who was 8, who is now in his thirties. As mentioned, Bushby has missed out on a lot.

Nonetheless, whether or not in hindsight Karl will feel his global adventure was worth all the effort and sacrifice is for a future determination. The fact is, this chapter is almost at its conclusion. Karl Bushby plans to arrive at his home in Hull by early November.
