Justin Verlander Will Make the Last Start of His Career Saturday Versus the Pirates
Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. And this pitching legend is ready for his last dance. The Tigers announced that Justin Verlander will make one final start on Saturday. Justin Verlander will make the last start of his career Saturday versus the Pirates after two decades in the MLB.
Justin has nothing left to prove to anyone. He is going into the Hall of Fame with ease. His Major League Baseball tenure includes: Twenty-one seasons, one MVP, three Cy Young awards, two World Series rings, three no-hitters, 556 starts, 3,571 innings, 3.554 strikeouts – and he will end it right where he started, at Comerica Park with the Old English D on his chest.
Verlander has started over 550 games over his impressive 21-year career, and holds a 183-115 record during his 14 total seasons with the Tigers. In preparation for his final outing, Justin tested some things out. Throwing a bullpen was one of his final hurdles before confirming his start. And Verlander got through his bullpen with no issues. Detroit Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said Justin Verlander completed his bullpen and walked into Hinch’s office “pretty excited.” Verlander is officially “all set” to pitch Saturday, Hinch said.
Nevertheless, at age 43, Justin has thrown a total of 14.1 innings this season. And none since his last minor league rehab start on June 10. But none of that has mattered. Justin Verlander didn’t work and rehab for six months to make a ceremonial appearance in the middle of Justin Verlander weekend at Comerica Park. He wants to compete. And he feels ready.

Justin Verlander discussed the emotions he is feeling now; and what he will probably experience on Saturday. And what he hopes he can accomplish from the mound. He says,
It’s difficult. There’s a lot of emotions going through me. There’s also some angst to go pitch. Obviously, I want to pitch well and I’ve done everything I possibly could to allow that to happen.
Who knows what’s going to happen,” he said. “But I don’t just want to go out there and go one inning, come out and wave. I want to toe the rubber one more time in a competitive way and try to win the Detroit Tigers a ballgame.”
But what about his pre-game routine and rituals? Will he still keep to his high-intensity, before game ways for his final start? No. Verlander will keep things pretty chill.
Justin reveals, “Yeah, I’m not going to put my headphones on and not talk to anybody; that’s not what this is about,” he said. “If I still need that to keep me focused for the last game I’ll ever pitch, something is wrong.”
