Former Heisman Trophy Candidate Diego Pavia Waived by Baltimore Ravens
To say he has a knack for rubbing people the wrong way is an understatement. When he was a nominee for one of college football’s most impressive awards, he didn’t hold back expressing his feelings about it. However, things did not go the way he wanted, and it’s been downhill for him ever since. It was announced on Thursday that former Heisman Trophy candidate Deigo Pavia was waived by the Baltimore Ravens. Apparently, to make room for center Ethan Pocic on the 90-man roster.
Pavia was part of the Ravens’ competition for the No. 3 quarterback spot during spring practices. So, he was already behind the 8-ball vying for a spot on the team. But now that Pavia has been waived the competition for quarterback is down to two. Veteran Skylar Thompson, who shined during minicamp, and undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano (Connecticut).
Pavia spent his final two college years at Vanderbilt where he garnered national attention. He broke the Vanderbilt record for single-game passing yards at 484, the previous record was 461 yards by Whit Taylor in 1981. Pavia became the first player in SEC history to have four consecutive games with over 400 yards of total offense. His accomplishments at Vanderbilt catapulted him into Heisman contention. But because he lost the trophy to Fernando Mendoza, he posted some nasty things.
However, he did post an apology and wrote that he had “much love and respect for the Heisman voters” while calling Mendoza “an elite competitor and a deserving winner of the award. But by that point the damage had been done, and people were not happy with Pavia. He ultimately went undrafted in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Nevertheless, he managed to catch on with the Baltimore Ravens to pursue an NFL career. Likely it was Head Coach Jesse Minter’s close relationship with Vanderbilt Head Coach Clark Lea that got Pavia through the Ravens’ door. That door has now been closed with Pavia being waived. So, what’s next for him football-wise?
The UFL has posted about Pavia being waived. Although the UFL has taken chances on notable players does Pavia have what it takes to play at the next level? At 5’10” he is not the right size for a prototypical quarterback. And the cloud of unsuitability still hangs over his head after his comments surrounding the Heisman Trophy. Therefore, it looks like a potential NFL career may be over for Pavia. But whether or not we’ve heard the last of him remains to be seen.
