Electronic Arts is Cutting 400 Jobs and Shutting Down BioWare
The future is uncertain and the gaming industry landscape continues to evolve and alter itself. Case in point, Electronic Arts is cutting 400 jobs and shutting down BioWare, the legendary development studio behind Dragon Age and Mass Effect.
After a groundbreaking three decade run, BioWare will disappear from existence. Around 400 EA employees are being laid off, including roughly 50 at BioWare. GameSpot reports,
“A year after EA’s $55 billion buyout by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, BioWare is shutting down. “Across our portfolio, we’re making deliberate choices to align talent and investments where we see the greatest opportunities for players and long-term growth,” a letter sent out to staff on Wednesday said.”
So then, the EA Studio Bioware didn’t make it through after the EA Buyout. This is EA’s first major restructuring since its $55 billion take-private deal closed in August. The company says it will support affected staff in “exploring other opportunities within EA.”
Furthermore, BioWare made the official announcement about their closure on Wednesday afternoon. The studio stated,
“For more than 30 years, BioWare has been more than a studio. It has been a home for storytellers, developers, and the players who brought our worlds to life.
Baldur’s Gate. Neverwinter Nights.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
Dragon Age. Mass Effect. Anthem.
Now, after more than three decades of shared adventures, BioWare is closing and early development on the next
Mass Effect project is ending.
There is nothing easy about writing those words. Our focus right now is on our incredibly talented team who put their hearts into these games, and supporting one another through this transition.
What generations of BioWare built together is something to celebrate and remember. These games became so much more because you played them, debated your choices, fell in love with the characters, and made these worlds your own.
From all of us at BioWare, thank you for being the most meaningful part of our story.”
BioWare started in Edmonton in 1995 when three doctors decided they’d rather make video games than practice medicine. That little studio went on to help shape what story-driven RPGs became. EA bought BioWare in 2008, and after more than three decades, it ends here.

But the gaming industry has morphed into a cutthroat realm where one mistake can end in shutdown. This pressure is leading to a loss of creativity; multiple cracks throughout the gaming world and development failures.
There were plenty of indications that BioWare would find themselves in trouble. The warning signs had been piling up. Especially in 2024 when a recent title reached only about 1.5 million players, nearly 50% below what EA expected. Flash forward to October 2026 and BioWare is being shut down. A studio that helped define an entire genre is gone, and one of gaming’s biggest franchises just lost the game that was supposed to carry it forward. Gaming history continues to disappear right before our eyes.
