Dexter Lawrence Got His Wish As New York Giants Have Traded Him to the Cincinnati Bengals

Would they or would they not? That was the question for which we were waiting for an answer and now we have received it. After wondering if the team would make a move or stay put the anticipation is now over. Dexter Lawrence got his wish as the New York Giants have traded him to the Cincinnati Bengals. According to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter:

Compensation update: Now that he has passed his physical and the trade is official, newly-acquired DT Dexter Lawerence is signing a one-year, $28 million contract extension with the Bengals, per @WinSportsGroup

The New York Giants will receive the No. 10 overall pick in the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft from the Bengals. That means the Giants now have eight total picks heading into Round 1 on Thursday night. So it’s safe to say they intend to build through the draft under new head coach John Harbaugh. Another interesting tidbit noted by Schefter is that:

“This is the first time a player has been traded without any additional compensation for a haul that included a Top-10 pick in that year’s draft since the Vikings traded Randy Moss to the Raiders in 2005 in exchange for a haul that included the 7th overall pick that year, per ESPN research.”

Which is just as well since the Bengals are in 18th place in cap space at $20,368,396. They apparently weren’t tied to the 10th pick since this year’s draft class appears to be underwhelming. Conversely, will the Bengals be able to create the cap space needed to give Lawrence the deal is looking for? As for the Giants, will accumulating so many first-round picks in a lackluster class prove to be a brilliant or bonehead move?

But as pointed out on the New York Giants’ website this is: “the second consecutive year the Giants have used multiple selections in the first round after they took outside linebacker Abdul Carter No. 3 overall and then traded back into the first round to draft quarterback Jaxson Dart with the No. 25 pick.”

As for Lawrence he compiled 109 regular-season games with 102 starts. Over the course of his seven seasons with the Giants. His career totals include 341 tackles, 103 quarterback hits. Also, 40 tackles for loss, 30.5 sacks, 15 passes defensed, five forced fumbles, and an interception. Last year was a down season for him, but can he rise again to the level he had in his previous seasons for the Cincinnati Bengals?

We’ll find out when the new season starts this fall.
