Deuce McBride Expressed Disappointment Not Offered New Contract Extension by Knicks
McBride is entering the final year of his contract and can be an unrestricted free agent next summer. Nevertheless, his desire is to remain in New York. But so far, the two sides have not come to any agreement. Due to this, Deuce McBride has expressed disappointment that he has still not been offered a new contract extension by the Knicks.
So what is the problem? What’s preventing a deal from getting done at this moment? Well, Deuce has indeed been a nice rotational piece for the Knicks. But New York can’t quite make the numbers work. Since winning a championship the hardest part for the franchise has been keeping their successful roster intact.
New York Knicks beat writer for the New York Daily News, Kristian Winfield reports,
“NEW: Miles McBride wants to stay in New York long-term. The Knicks won’t cross the second apron to make it happen — making his future in NYC cloudy at best.
It’s the unfortunate state of affairs for McBride, a key member of last year’s championship squad who is up for a contract extension entering the final season of his three-year deal, meeting the ugly side of the business of basketball: The Knicks are facing a mandate not to encroach the punitive $222 million second apron. As a result, they are forced to make tough decisions regarding the core of the roster responsible for ending New York City’s 53-year NBA championship drought.
A team over the second apron loses its own toolbox: no taxpayer mid-level exception, no sign-and-trade, no aggregating two contracts into one incoming deal, no matching more than the outgoing salary in a trade — and if it’s a repeat offender, over the line in three of five seasons, its first-round pick seven years out gets frozen at the bottom of the draft and can’t be traded at all.
Miles McBride has earned his keep. The Knicks just can’t pay him what he’s worth — or at least they won’t go over the second apron to do it, same as they wouldn’t for Robinson.”

So then, exceeding the second apron is an absolute no-go for New York. However, the Knicks stance has now led to McBride feeling discontented with the circumstances.
Deuce McBride on extension talks, “I’m a little disappointed… I want to be in New York. So yeah, it’s a little hard at times…I’ve played through injury, I’ve been through a lot with this team… so you know, I’d love to get something done.”
