Coco Gauff Youngest Player to Make Semifinals of All Four Grand Slams Since Maria Sharapova in 2007

It was quarterfinals time at Wimbledon. Early Tuesday morning, tennis enthusiasts were treated to a back-and-forth thriller and it led to them witnessing history. At just 22 years old, Coco Gauff becomes the youngest player to make the semifinals of all four Grand Slams since Maria Sharapova did so back in 2007.

Coco Gauff is the sixth player since 2000 to reach the Women’s Singles semi-finals at all four Grand Slams before turning 23. The other five? The exclusive list includes:

Venus Williams
Serena Williams
Kim Clijsters
Justine Henin
Maria Sharapova

At first things looked a bit grim for Coco. Jessie Pegula took the first set 6-4 over Gauff. Bringing her just one set away from a semifinal spot in Wimbledon. However, Gauff would not go quietly into the wee hours of the morning. She fought back.

Coco leveled out the playing field in the next set with commanding power and some hiccups on Pegula’s part. Coco fights back to take the second set 6-3 over Pegula. In the end after playing a decider, Coco Gauff would defeat Jessica Pegula 4-6 6-3 6-3.

Gauff is having an amazing run on grass surface as she reaches her very first Wimbledon semifinal. This is also her 6th Grand Slam semifinal at just 22 years old; as well as first Grand Slam semifinal of the season.

Coco Gauff briefly spoke to media and fans after her historic victory. When asked how it feels to make her first Wimbledon semifinal, Gauff replied,

“Honestly, pretty insane. Considering I hadn’t won a match on grass in 2 years before this tournament. I’m definitely just really happy with how I played today. Jess is an incredible opponent and person, playing against her is never easy. I’m just happy to get through this one today.”

After a few more moments of reflection, with her classic laughter Coco added,After 7 years of playing this tournament, it’s finally the first time I can walk on this Centre court and I didn’t feel nervous. I don’t know if I’m becoming a vet or… (laughs) I don’t know!”

Well, what we do know is that Gauff looked confident in this matchup and played great tennis. Yet, both American ladies should be proud. Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula are the first pair of American ladies’ top-10 seeds to meet at Wimbledon since Serena Williams defeated her sister Venus in the 2009 Final.

Nonetheless, Coco Gauff and Karolina Muchova will now face each other in the semifinals of Wimbledon. Coco leads their head to head 6-1. However, Karolina won their most recent match in Stuttgart this year.
