NBA Shooting Guard Donovan Mitchell Has Agreed to Massive Maximum Contract Extension

His presence has been a difference maker and an improvement for the team since joining in 2022. He was initially acquired by the Utah Jazz in the first round of the 2017 NBA Draft from the Denver Nuggets. The Utah Jazz were led to the playoffs with his help but could never get the championship. He left Utah and went to the Cleveland Cavaliers and has proven to be a boon to the team. But there were questions as to whether he would remain. They have been answered as NBA shooting guard Donovan Mitchell has agreed to a massive maximum contract extension.

With the new contract in place, Mitchell will remain with the Cleveland Cavaliers. ESPN NBA Insider Shams Charania provides the details:

“BREAKING: Cleveland Cavaliers All-NBA star Donovan Mitchell has agreed on a four-year, $273 million maximum contract extension that includes a player option for the 2030-31 season and a full trade kicker, CAA’s Co-Head of Basketball, Austin Brown, tells ESPN.”

Charania went on to describe the relationship between Mitchell and the front office posting the following:

“Cavaliers’ owner Dan Gilbert and president of basketball operations Koby Altman spoke with Mitchell and Brown once the seven-time NBA All-Star was able to land a new extension and reached terms quickly. All parties have been in lockstep on the future direction. Mitchell has played a significant part in the Cavaliers’ conversations to improve the roster, and supportive of the front office, and that has continued this summer.”

He further commented on how the timing of the signing demonstrates Mitchell’s commitment to the team writing:

“After leading the Cavaliers to the Eastern Conference finals, Mitchell could have waited until next summer for an additional fifth season worth an extra $80 million but instead committed early on a long-term extension on the first day he was eligible for a new contract to stamp his pledge to the city of Cleveland. This marks the second extension for Mitchell since arriving to Cleveland in 2022.”

Now that Cleveland has Mitchell in its folds for the foreseeable future some may wonder if LeBron James will come back. We know he has opted not to stay with the Los Angeles Lakers. It’s said that he has been in numerous talks with other teams including the Cavaliers. So will he return to Cleveland for a third time? We’ll have to wait on the King to make his decision of where he will go.

In the meantime, the Cavs still have the tremendous presence of seven-time NBA All-Star Donovan Mitchell. Will he be able to surpass the playoffs and bring home a championship to the Cavaliers? We’ll see but congratulations to Donovan on his new massive contract!
