The National Football League is off to a very good start. The fans are excited for the 2026-2027 season and the numbers are telling the full story. Broncos-Chiefs became the most-watched Week 1 game of ESPN’s Monday Night Football era.

Yes, Monday Night Football opened ESPN’s Super Bowl LXI season with a record-setting audience. Over 23 million NFL fans tuned in to watch the Kansas City Chiefs smash the Denver Broncos. Although, this opening matchup took the record in terms of Week 1 glory. It isn’t the biggest MNF game of all time.

However, Denver-Kansas City is still up there. Now into the top five Monday broadcasts. It was the third most-watched MNF game of all time on ESPN.

FUN FACT: Only two telecasts have drawn larger audiences since 2010. The 2023 Super Bowl rematch between the Eagles and Chiefs. Plus, the 2023 Christmas-night matchup between the Ravens and 49ers.

This is also MNF’s largest Week 1 audience since 2010. Averaging 1.9 million viewers across ESPN and NFL Network. The pregame show was up 7% compared to Week 1 last season. The audience is up 5% from last season’s Week 1 Vikings-Bears matchup. Continuing the strong momentum of ESPN’s signature NFL franchise.

The Chiefs kicked off their 2026 NFL regular season with a statement win at Arrowhead Stadium, highlighted by dominant performances on both sides of the ball. Star offseason acquisition Kenneth Walker III carried the offensive load in his team debut. He rushed for a career-high 173 yards, including an explosive 60-yard touchdown run on fourth down, and caught a 2-yard touchdown pass.

And coming back from a severe knee injury, quarterback Patrick Holmes looked like nothing happened lol. He threw for two touchdowns and scrambled for a 15-yard rushing touchdown. Also, Kansas City’s defense was deadly; holding the Broncos to just 10 points.

The Athletics’ Andrew Marchand confirmed the ratings and viewership numbers for the Mannings. Marchand reveals, “Great number overall. 705K for the Manningcast on ESPN2 (not in the release, but I’ve confirmed).”
