NBA Commissioner Adam Silver on Steve Ballmer’s Statement and WNBA Commissioner Search
They’re two big subjects in pro basketball right now. Cap circumvention and a new commissioner. And the National Basketball Association’s commissioner had brief conversations on both. NBA commissioner Adam Silver commented on Steve Ballmer’s statement and the WNBA commissioner search.
The Clippers received one of the harshest penalties handed down from the league after the NBA concluded their investigation into the LA Clippers organization. At first the franchise was completely against the punishments, but 11 days after had a complete change of heart regarding the situation. With owner Steve Ballmer even releasing a statement about how the Clippers shall readily comply with everything.
Regarding Ballmer’s recent comments Adam Silver says:
“Putting aside the precise words he chose to use, most importantly, he indicated a willingness to accept the league’s decision in this case and the accompanying sanctions. So that initially was the most focused on, which is markedly different than the initial statements that came out of his organization.”
Adam Silver also talked to the media about the upcoming WNBA commissioner search; as well as the amount of autonomy the next WNBA commissioner may have. While the NBA had already revealed Cathy Engelbert would be out at the end of the 2026 season.

Nevertheless, on the WNBA Commissioner situation Silver reveals,
“My NBA/WNBA colleagues … are in the process now of interviewing search firms. Once we hire a search firm, we’ll begin the search in earnest.
I would say we’re constantly recalibrating. Having been involved now with the WNBA for 30 years, I think there are enormous benefits to running integrated operations, and there are also aspects of the league which I think are best run independently.”
He added later:
“Maybe say this a bit defensively: I don’t think it’s hampered the operation of the WNBA at all. I think the WNBA is by far and away the most successful women’s league operating right now, by measure of viewership, by measure of ratings, by measure of franchise value, by measure of player pay. Now, after the next collective bargain agreement, and I’m sure as we bring in this new commissioner, that person will have a view too, as to the appropriate operating structure of the league.”
