Was One of the Current Influential WNBA Players Disrespected in a Sports Poll?
Who doesn’t like sharing their opinions on who they think is the best or brightest in any particular sport. Debating who is the greatest of whatever sport or topic is always an engaging and even sometimes hostile entertainment. And things did get heated when it came to talking about the ESPN WNBA top 50 rankings. It turns out that people were not happy with where Caitlin Clark was ranked. So, was one of the current influential players disrespected in a sports poll?
Well, some believe being ranked 10th in the poll was a slap in the face for Caitlin Clark. It’s true that Clark only played in 13 games last season due to suffering a series of injuries. Including left quadriceps tightness and strain, left and right groin injuries, and a bone bruise on her left ankle. The last game she played was on July 15 and thereafter missed the rest of the season. Despite all of that Clark was still named an All-Star for the second straight year and was even selected as a captain for one of the teams. Which may explain why people were so irritated with her being ranked 10th.
For the record here are the nine other players who were ranked above her:
- A’ja Wilson, Las Vegas Aces – Reigning MVP
- Alyssa Thomas, Phoenix Mercury – Third in MVP voting
- Napheesa Collier, Minnesota Lynx – first-team all-defense
- Breanna Stewart, New York Liberty – Unrivaled championship winner
- Jackie Young, Las Vegas Aces – Competed in all seven playoffs of her career
- Sabrina Ionescu, New York Liberty – First in free-throw percentage last season
- Allisha Gray, Atlanta Dream – Holds franchise record for most points in a season
- Paige Bueckers, Dallas Wings – 2025 top pick became Rookie of the Year
- Kelsey Plum, Los Angeles Sparks – 2-time Championship winner

The competition is stiff in the top 10 arena. No doubt Clark wants to stay healthy this year and help her team, the Indiana Fever, bring home a championship. Through her first two seasons, Clark has played 53 games and has averaged 18.5 points, 8.5 assists, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.4 steals per game. She has the juice to be a difference maker. The Fever made it to the conference finals last year even with Sophie Cunningham being sidelined.
With Boston, Clark, Cunningham and others playing perhaps the team can bring home a championship. But one thing is for sure, no poll ranking ever guaranteed any player success. Fans should hope she and her teammates stay healthy so we can enjoy watching some fast-paced entertaining basketball!
