Spurs Victor Wembanyama Says He Would Never Sign Deal With Sports Betting Company

Gambling and sports have become increasingly interconnected over the years. With billions of dollars being at play annually. This aspect of sports entertainment has become as common as the very basketball on the court or the ball on the field. However, not every athlete wishes to become a face or endorser of betting or prediction markets. One individual in particular is a member of San Antonio. The Spurs Victor Wembanyama says he would never sign a deal with a sports betting company.

Sports betting is wildly profitable. The industry made $13.7 billion in 2024 alone. Furthermore, according to the American Gaming Association, sports betting revenue surged to a record $16.96 billion in 2025, a staggering 22.8% year-over-year increase. That figure was bolstered by a 22% annual growth of the online sports betting market.

Some of this growth is due to famous persons and figures promoting various betting platforms. Big stars stand to make huge profits by simply attaching their names. But such paydays are not for everyone.

Despite the popularity, and despite the potential revenue Wembanyama could net, he’s not interested in those endorsements. “Absolutely not,” Wembanyama told reporters Thursday, Oct. 1 when asked if he would ever become a brand ambassador for a sports gambling company. “I would never do that. Honestly, I think it’s very sad to see some players promote it, in my opinion. Everybody does whatever they want, but without me.”

Jared Weiss of The Athletic highlighted further thoughts and sentiments from Wemby on this matter. That it is not just about not wanting to promote betting. But Victor is also concerned about the impression it could have on his fanbase.

Weiss reports, “Wembanyama says that he has turned down big endorsement deals in the past that were not aligned with his values, [he says]: “Obviously, we earn millions and millions. This is not our biggest strength. Our biggest strength is inspiring, and we can inspire in a good way or a bad way. I want to inspire in a good way. That’s the strongest thing I can do.”
