Sometimes when you know, you know. Oftentimes, rookies have no choice of where they will land and eventually play. But for this defensive powerhouse, he knew what he wanted and it worked out well. Now he is playing in the NBA Finals in just his sophomore season. Here’s why the San Antonio Spurs Stephon Castle pushed his way to San Antonio in the NBA draft.

Stephon was always a coveted draft pick and choice. Castle had won a championship at UConn so he was being highly scouted, considered and evaluated. For this reason, he wasn’t sure where he would land because many franchises wanted him.

However, there was one organization he truly had his eye on, the San Antonio Spurs. He loved how Victor Wembamyama played the game and thought his own skillset would be a cohesive addition to what was being built and constructed for the Spurs future success. Fortunately, the Spurs front office agreed, and some ethical hoops has been enjoyed by one and all.

Nonetheless, in the midst of vying for the Spurs first championship since 2014; Castle admits he actively avoided other teams in the 2024 NBA Draft so he could team up with Victor Wembanyama. Stephon told Sam Amick of The Athletic,

“I was just looking on the defensive side of things (in San Antonio), where being able to pair with Victor was definitely a plus in my eyes.I just thought it would have been a perfect fit, and I feel like it was.

I think being (in San Antonio) was always number one on my list. Internally, I always felt like I was the best player in that draft. (But) I didn’t know what could happen. My agent always told me, like, anything can happen in a draft. Like, you could not work out for a team, not have talked to a team, and they can still take you. So, I mean, I wasn’t really planning on playing in Houston. I didn’t really know how any of that worked. I was kind of hoping I could slide my way to San Antonio. It kind of worked out for me.”

Well, getting to the team he wanted is already paying dividends. San Antonio has gone DEEP into the postseason and are close to their goal. The Spurs are a few wins from a title if they can finish strong against the Knicks. We’ll see if they can tie it up in Game 4 or watch as New York takes a dominating 3-1 lead in the series.
