Solid Batter Luis Arraez Acquired by the Philadelphia Phillies from the Giants
Sometimes being reliable in the MLB is not always the best thing if a guy wants to get comfortable. When a player offers continuity and consistency he tends to be in demand. And that’s what happening in a recent trade in the MLB. Solid batter Luis Arraez has been acquired by the Philadelphia Phillies from the San Francisco Giants. They also receive RHP Caleb Kilian in exchange for the Giants receiving RHP Ramon Marquez (PHI’s No. 4 prospect), RHP Marty Gair. The Phillies also receive also acquired left-hander Brooks Raley from the Mets for prospects John Spikerman and Luke Gabrysh.
Arraez has been on the move quite a bit in the last few years. He began his career with the Minnesota Twins in 2013, signing as an international free agent. But he wasn’t added to their roster until after the 2018 season. From there he was traded to the Miami Marlins after the 2018 season in exchange for Pablo López, José Salas, and Byron Chourio. Arráez ended the season with an MLB-leading .354 average. He won the NL batting title, becoming the second player in the modern era to win a batting title in both leagues.
After that on May 4, 2024, the Marlins traded Arráez and cash considerations to the San Diego Padres in exchange for Dillon Head, Jakob Marsee, Nathan Martorella, and Woo-suk Go. He was happy and productive with the Padres becoming a welcome part to the fun bunch. He was there between 2024-2025 and became the first player in league history to win three consecutive batting titles with three different teams. Unfortunately, the Padres didn’t have the payroll to keep him. So, he signed a one-year, $12 million contract with the San Francisco Giants in February 2026.

It is quite likely that Arraez will continue to play second base for the Phillies. However, his acquisition means changes for other players, especially Bryce Harper. Harper’s original position was in right field. But he transitioned to first base starting in 2023 after recovering from elbow surgery. Harper said he was ready to return to the outfield, if the Phillies found an upgrade for the offense. And Bryson Stott moving from second base to third base.
Arraez is an upgrade for a team that needs more offensive power. Arraez is a guy who can get on base and put the ball in play. Currently, his strikeout rate (4.5 percent) is by far the lowest out of 150 qualified hitters in baseball. However, he will be a free agent after the season. No doubt, Padres fans would love to get Arraez back on their team next season. But of course, the sale of the team has to be approved first before any moves can be made.
