One has been out recovering from an extended knee injury. The other was a much-maligned rookie looking to start his second season as a professional football player. In other words, both have had tough paths to travel. Nevertheless, the two have found a common ground to help each other. Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson are working together prior to the upcoming quarterback competition. Both players will be vying for the starting quarterback job with the Cleveland Browns.

Watson’s tenure with the Browns has not worked out the way the team had hoped. They backed up the Brinks truck to woo him away from the Houston Texans, but the investment has not paid off. Last season, it appeared the Browns begrudgingly drafted Sanders in the fifth-round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Then they proceeded to play Dillon Gabriel until he suffered a concussion. Although Sanders played for the remaining half of the season, he still has an uphill battle this season.

However, despite the deck being stacked against him, he has come together with Watson to get prepared for training camp. Speaking to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com following his youth camp weekend, Sanders said:

“I would say it’s the same thing that we’ve been saying from Day 1,” Sanders said. “We’re both trying to be the best version of ourselves we could be. So, we’re not going to let anything get in between of that. So, it’s a level of respect that we all in the quarterback room have for each other.

“And we’re not really emotional when it comes to things that we can’t control. We mainly focus on and thrive on getting better in the work every day. So, if I like something he’s doing, I ask. If he likes something I do, then [he] asks. It’s conversation, and that’s what’s most effective.”

It’s refreshing to hear that the two quarterbacks seem to be getting along together. And Sanders maturity is on display as well despite others painting him as not leadership material. But Sanders and Watson were not alone as they were joined by some wide receivers. Jerry JeudyIsaiah BondCedric TillmanKC Concepcion and Denzel Boston were among the wideouts at the Miami workouts, per Cabot.

If Sanders can’t win the job, general manager Andrew Berry may have to draft another quarterback in the 2027 NFL Draft. However, that’s what the Browns have been doing for the past several seasons. Hopefully, Sanders will prove that he is up for the challenge. Especially since Watson is in the last year of his contract and not likely to be back with the team once it ends.
