San Antonio Spurs Took 3-1 Lead in Series Against Portland Trailblazers as Victor Wembanyama Returned

He took a hard spill on the court last week that literally knocked him out of the playoff game. It was such a hard fall that when his head hit the court, he temporarily lost consciousness. After the hard knock he immediately left the court and did not return to the game. There was hope that he would be back for the next playoff game. But those hopes were dashed when he wasn’t cleared to play. However, the San Antonio Spurs took the 3-1 lead in the series against the Portland Trailblazers as Victor Wembanyama returned on Sunday afternoon.

Despite his return after missing Game 3 it looked as if the Trailblazers were going to get the best of the Spurs initially. They were down as much as 17 points at halftime and didn’t seem as if Wemby’s return would have the desired effect. But the Spurs said hold your horses we’re not done yet. They became the first team in NBA playoff history to trail by 15 or more at halftime and win by 15 or more. In fact, Wemby showed exactly why he was named the NBA Defensive Player of the Year. He came through with 27 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, seven blocks and four steals.

Other members of the Spurs’ team stepped besides Wembanyama. Dean Vassell gave his team the lead when he made a basket with 4:05 left in the third quarter, putting the Spurs ahead 64-62. And Keldon Johnson’s massive dunk gave the Spurs a 101-81 lead. That capped a 37-point turnaround in nearly 20 minutes of game time. Incredible!

Now the Spurs will get to head back to Texas and play in front of a wildly ecstatic home crowd. And they will have plenty of reasons to cheer on their team. For one thing last night the Spurs overcame a double-digit deficit in the second half – a solid sign for a young team. It was their second time accomplishing such a feat. Hence Wembanyama was inspired to say:

“In adversity, we stick together, we get closer to each other, we feed off each other (and) feed off each other’s energy,” Wembanyama said, adding, “We thrive when we do the invisible efforts that benefit others. There’s no jealousy (and) nobody cares about their stat line. It’s our greatest strength.”

The next game will be on Tuesday in San Antonio at 9:30 ET on ESPN. If they can pull out a victory, it will be their first playoff series win since 2017 and the first playoff series victory for almost all of San Antonio’s roster. Including their head coach Mitch Johnson. You gotta love seeing young and upcoming teams become winners!
