Rays Are Bringing Back Gray Tampa Bay Road Jerseys With Modern Twist
Don’t call it comeback. But it is a win because the road gray threads are returning at long last. On Monday, it was announced that the Rays are bringing back the gray Tampa Bay Road Jerseys with a modern twist.
Tampa Bay have unveiled a new primary road jersey that is a “modernized take on the original road gray Tampa Bay uniforms worn from 1998-2000.” The new road uniform will also serve as the Rays’ primary road uniforms moving forward.
The Tampa Bay Rays will “reintroduce” these retro gray uniforms tomorrow night at Yankee Stadium. To debut them for Game 2 of the doubleheader. Fitting, since Yankee Stadium is where Tampa Bay has a chance to clinch its first American League East championship since 2021. All they need is just one win against New York.
Nonetheless, “Tampa Bay” will be prominently displayed across the chest on a road uniform for first time in nearly two decades. Furthermore, the uniform celebrates the passion and enthusiasm of Rays fans. A fandom that collectively voted for and selected the design in a poll on social channels in March 2026.
Regarding Tampa Bay’s new threads, Rays chief executive officer Ken Babby said in a statement,
“These uniforms celebrate our long-term commitment to Tampa Bay. As our team travels the country, we do so with tremendous admiration for our home. Tampa Bay is always in our hearts and that’s why we will wear it across our chest.
We are particularly proud that our fans helped choose this design, and we love the fact they want the baseball world to see ‘Tampa Bay’ when we play on the road.”
Rays Are Bringing Back Gray Tampa Bay Road Jerseys With Modern Twist
The Rays haven’t worn “Tampa Bay” on a primary jersey since 2007. When the franchise rebranded and dropped the “Devil” in their team name. Their City Connect uniforms, introduced in 2024, also have “Tampa Bay” across the chest. However, those are only worn on select occasions, usually at home.
Some design details to note: the gradient on the front of the jersey is meant to mirror the color scheme of the Devil Rays’ original home uniforms. Which were brought back into the Rays’ permanent style guide in 2023 to celebrate the franchise’s 25th anniversary. Additionally, the cap and helmet are also updated versions of the Devil Rays’ 1998 looks. Intentionally replacing most of the black from that color scheme with the more modern Rays navy blue the team now features.
