They are now closer to hosting a Wild Card series than being out of the playoffs. Best part? The youth core for the future is looking extremely promising and bright. Case in point, the Padres Ethan Salas made history with his first triple MLB hit.
Ethan Salas (20 years, 140 days). San Diego signed Ethan Salas as an international free agent in back January 2023. The Padres No.1 prospect famously jumped to Double-A San Antonio when he was only 17 years old. However, he is now at the very beginning fringes of his pro baseball career. And has already done something most major leaguers players have not.
Padres catcher Ethan Salas hit his first major league career triple on September 13, 2026. It came against the San Francisco Giants. Salas hit a 352-foot triple to right field off Giants pitcher Logan Webb at Oracle Park. He became the youngest player in Padres history since 2012 to record a triple and the youngest MLB player since 2022 to record a triple as a catcher.
Salas is the first catcher to triple for his first Major League hit since Adley Rutschman in 2022. Additionally, he is just the seventh catcher since 1998 whose first hit was a triple.
Interestingly, he is on the same team and roster with the guy who has done something similar. Ethan’s first big-league knock coming after starting his career 0-for-15 following his September 1 call-up. Put him in rare company as the youngest player to triple for his first career hit since teammate Manny Machado in 2012. Machado did it at 20 years and 34 days on Aug. 9, 2012.

Ethan’s first hit seemed to elude him for a bit. During previous at-bats he would come so close. But just could not seem to get the monkey off his back. That is till the fourth inning of the Padres’ 6-4 win over the Giants on Sunday evening at Oracle Park. Salas at long last cracked a triple off the wall in right field, just below Levi’s Landing.
Achieving a big milestone for himself and for the Padres organization. Salas’ first hit undoubtedly confirms that the next era of Padres baseball has officially arrived. Salas, Tatis Jr. and Merrill looked poised to be a top young core.
Post All-Star break Fernando and Jackson are among the top MLB Duos in the league. Combining for an 1.929 OPS with 31 HR and 80 RBI. The only duo ahead of them are the Cubs’ Crow-Armstrong and Bregman.
Therefore, it looks like in San Diego, the kids are alright. After Sunday’s victory, Salas said how good it felt to get his first hit. He mentions, “Like a breath of fresh air,” said Salas with a smile. “I’m happy to get the first out of the way.”
