OKC Thunder Wins Game 3 Taking 2-1 Lead in WCF Series
And the thrills just keep on coming. This series has been entertainingly stressful to say the least; the type of game all hardcore sports fans love. San Antonio stole game one in OKC’s own house and the Thunder answered right back, coming away victorious and evening things to 1-1 in Game 2. The third installment of this matchup featuring these two 60-win teams included a fast start, lead change, a score tie, lockdown defense and of course, eye-popping plays. In the end, OKC Thunder wins Game 3 taking a 2-1 lead in WCF series.
The San Antonio Spurs opened the game with a 15-0 run, but then they quickly seemed to lose control of their trajectory. There were three noticeable factors that contributed to the flip of momentum in the first half into OKC’s favor. The Thunder would strike hard when Victor was not on the court, OKC’s bench was money and Wemby was kept out of the paint.
In fact, it was the OKC bench that led the charge on a 15-5 run while Victor Wembanyama was sitting that got the Thunder back into the game. San Antonio had been leading by five when the first quarter concluded. Less than two minutes into the second quarter, the Thunder were leading 32-31.
Additionally, OKC did a very good job of keeping Victor Wembanyama out of the paint during the first two quarters. Wemby had eight points on 2-for-4 shooting from the field (2 for 3 from deep) in 16 minutes. The Thunder would go into halftime leading by seven, 58-51.
Furthermore, in the second half the Thunder stuck with their game plan. Increase the lead and take advantage when Wembanyama went to take a breather. With six minutes remaining in the third quarter, OKC still led 75-67. The Spurs weren’t going away, but they would need to pick things up in the fourth quarter if they wanted to pull off a win in front of their home audience.
OKC Thunder Wins Game 3 Taking 2-1 Lead in WCF Series
With a little more than four minutes to go in the third quarter, a few facts came to the fore. San Antonio fortunately was not egregiously losing the rebounding battle. Both teams at this point of the game were tied in turnovers and the Thunder have been called for more fouls. The only real difference was shotmaking. The Spurs offense just was not clicking as much as it had when the game began. Could they bring that initial magic and energy back?
Nah, was not meant to be this evening. San Antonio could never seem to overcome mainly a ten point deficit. OKC would hang on to win and take a 2-1 advantage in the series. Now both teams will get some much needed rest and be back to stress us all out again on Sunday. We will see if Spurs can tie things back or if the Thunder will completely devastate San Antonio at home. Sure to be another great game!
