NBA Commissioner Adam Silver Provided Updates on the Old and New in Press Conference
It’s hard to believe but the 2026-2027 NBA regular season is just five weeks away. However, before getting into the new season there was some unfinished business to address with the media. Therefore, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver provided updates on the old and the new in his press conference. The media session took place two days after the Board of Governors event in midtown Manhattan. One of the first issues to come up was the punishment of the Los Angeles Clippers and Kawhi Leonard salary cap circumvention case. Silver was asked how it was determined that punishment was not harsh or too light. His response was:
“That’s in some ways the most difficult part of adjudicating these disputes,” the commissioner said, “because while there have to be competitive consequences, our view, if these rules are violated, we still want to be a 30-team league.
“We recognize that in some ways we’re unfortunately punishing the fans of that team as well. That’s the balance we’re trying to seek. I don’t think in any way we’ve done permanent damage to this franchise.”
“No question, this is a setback for the team,” Silver said. “The ultimate goal in terms of these type of sanctions is to ensure that other teams don’t engage in this type of behavior in the future.”
So, we would presume that it’s best not to violate any rules less the organization cause damage to both the team and its fanbase. Another topic discussed was expansion. Las Vegas and Seattle were the frontrunners, but Seattle got less attention than Las Vegas. Seattle’s stadium is more settled. However, the possibility of using either a renovated T-Mobile Arena or what Silver called a new “modern entertainment palace” is a tantalizing possibility. An expansion decision is expected by the end of 2026.

Also, part of the discussion was NBA Europe. Negotiations are being held with the EuroLeague about partnering in the new endeavor. But whatever happens some version of NBA Europe would begin play in 2027 regardless. Another concern to be dealt with is the Portland Trailblazers. Fans are concerned that owner Tom Dundon may relocate the team. “It’s my hope that we can lower the temperature honestly a bit in these negotiations,” Dundon said. Silver said he spoke at length with Dundon this week in New York. Silver added: “I would see it as a failure if we did not keep the team in Portland.”
Last but not least, the Board of Governors had a change in chairman. This session was the last with Toronto’s Larry Tanenbaum as chairman, who held the post for nine years. Miami’s Micky Arison now assumes that role.
