Naomi Osaka and Aryna Sabalenka to Face Off in Historic Roland Garros Night Match

It rarely happens for the women’s tennis players but this time around things will be different. Naomi Osaka and Aryna Sabalenka to face off in a historic Roland Garros night match. The last time a women’s night match took place was three years ago at the French Open. Even though night matches were first introduced in Paris five years ago, this match will only be the fifth one for women. Coincidentally, Sabalenka appeared in the last night match when she defeated Sloane Stephens in 2023.

When asked about playing in the night match, Osaka replied, “YOLO.” Which is the abbreviation for “You Only Live Once.” So, she appears to be taking the night match in stride. As for Sabalenka, she’s been there and done that, hence she stated, “I’m just ready for the fight,” Sabalenka said. “It’s great to see her back on her level. … I really enjoy our battles. It’s high-level matches, and I really enjoy when somebody push me to the limit.”

Sabalenka is looking for her first-ever title at Roland Garros, but she’ll have to get past Osaka who is currently ranked 16th in the world. And is a four-time Grand Slam winner. However, Sabalenka has been having a good year dropping just 18 games over her first three matches, winning all of them in straight sets.

Despite this upcoming match some are less than satisfied and have been critical of the Roland Garros committee members’ decisions.

Jelena Ostapenko, the 2017 French Open champion had this to say about the night match:

“I wish women’s tennis could be shown more in those spots. The men always have the priority with the scheduling, they take the most popular slots, and on bigger courts,” Ostapenko told BBC Sport.

“I like to play at night – especially when the stadiums are full. I’m the kind of player that really enjoys it when there are a lot of fans watching, and I think that’s what we all play for.” She added: “I hope it will change. Even if it’s not me playing, I would like to see some women’s matches there. But I don’t know that we will.”

Apparently, the men’s matches take precedence because the women’s best-of-three set matches are too brief compared to the best-of-five format used in men’s competition. And television broadcasters are also in favor of airing the men’s matches over the women’s matches. However, the Osaka – Sabalenka match should be a good one. Tune in when the match gets underway Monday at 8:15 p.m. local time.
