There have been multiple changes in south Florida. There are a new head coach and a new general manager. While many familiar faces are now gone such as Tua Tagovailoa, Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. But some guys have been retained on the offensive side of the ball and been given a new deal. The Miami Dolphins and running back De’Von Achane agreed to a new contract extension. According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport:

“Achane and the Dolphins have reached an agreement on a four-year, $64 million contract extension that includes $32 million guaranteed. Rapoport added that the deal can end up being worth up to $68 million in incentives.”

The new deal makes Achane the third highest paid running back after Saquon Barkley and Christian McCaffrey. He edged out Breece Hall of the New York Jets who just about a week ago was the third highest paid running back. Nevertheless, both men look to play important roles on their respective teams that are looking to improve upon their previous seasons.

Achane has become known as one of the most explosive backs in the league. He rushed for 1,350 yards and eight touchdowns in 2025 while leading the league with 5.67 yards per carry. And he caught 67 passes for 488 yards and four touchdowns. With Tua gone, Malik Willis will be the Dolphins’ quarterback. Pairing him with Achane can give the Dolphins an advantage. As offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik said:

“…sometimes when you get a guy that maybe isn’t as mobile at quarterback is, they have eleven guys and aside from throwing the ball, you’re really playing with ten. So, it just lets you equalize some advantageous situations.” He also added: “So it’s definitely a weapon and it’s a threat and it’s something you want a defense to think about, but I think no one in the NFL is coming out and just living in that world.”

This offseason has brought a lot of change to the Dolphins. It’s been kind of, “out with old in with the new.” Hence the Dolphins have quite a bit of dead cap money with the movement of Tagovailoa and others. As detailed by Sports Illustrated, “They’ve released numerous players on both sides of the ball and are taking on their salaries as they look to rebuild quickly. They made poor contract decisions along the way, most notably including making Tagovailoa tied for the second-highest paid quarterback in NFL history.”

However, the team is working to turn things around and signing Achane to an extension is a step in the right direction. If they can continue to make logical decisions, they may be able to right the ship.
