LHP Nestor Cortes and Phillies Are Reportedly in Agreement on a Contract
He is finally back in action. And it looks like Philadelphia will gain a much needed arm. Wednesday afternoon it was divulged that free agent LHP Nestor Cortes and the Phillies are reportedly in agreement on a contract.
Where has Cortes been? Well, simply put, recovering from injury. Nestor Cortes Jr. underwent surgery in October 2025 to repair a torn tendon in his throwing arm. On Tuesday, he posted a video on his own social media account showing himself throwing for scouts. Drawing much attention from several teams.
Cortes worked out yesterday at Miami Dade College in front of scouts. And several teams showed interest, including the Red Sox, Yankees and White Sox.
His throwing obviously impressed those who were in attendance. For the very next day the Phillies organization and Nestor announced that they were able to come to an agreement. So that Cortes could join the ball club as they continue to stay in the race to maintain a playoffs spot.

Regarding this development, Robert Murray of FanSided reports,
“Cortes, 31, underwent surgery on his throwing arm in October of last year and was expected to be sidelined for nine or 10 months. But he’s healthy now, has been throwing for teams recently and drew interest from numerous teams before signing with the Phillies.
It’s unclear where Cortes will fit in Philadelphia, but he provides veteran depth for a franchise which has been searching for reinforcements since the trade deadline. Their current rotation features Cristopher Sanchez, Zack Wheeler, Jesus Luzardo, Aaron Nola and Andrew Painter. Cortes could be part of a six-man rotation to keep others fresh or, perhaps more likely, the left-hander could be used out of the bullpen as he continues to ramp up coming off the extended absence from injury. Given how bumpy things have been at times this year for both Nola and Painter, having another viable big-league option — even one who could piggyback with each righty on the same day — gives Don Mattingly some helpful flexibility.”
The Phillies currently hold the second wild card position. With the San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks close behind. The Phillies are hoping that this move will relieve the pressure on their pitching and help keep them ahead of other National League contenders.
