Kristaps Porzingis Announced He is Stepping Away from Basketball
It’s bad news for the Golden State Warriors who could use a 7′ tall center/power forward. Yes, they are on a winning streak right now but what about the future. That will likely be affected by a decision of a member of the Warriors roster. Kristaps Porzingis has announced that he is stepping away from basketball. This decision could end his 10-year basketball career that began for the Latvian in Spain. Like all too many athletes his career has been hampered by injuries. A factor that played into his decision to leave the game.
Porzingis began his professional career with Sevilla in Spain (2012–2015), winning the EuroCup Rising Star award in 2015. From there he was the 4th overall draft pick by the New York Knicks in 2015. While there he earned All‑Rookie First Team honors (2016) and became a cornerstone for the team. Even named as an NBA All‑Star in 2018. However, it was there in 2018 that he suffered a torn ACL and missed the entire 2018-2019 season. Further he had disagreements with Knicks front office, so he was traded to the Dallas Mavericks in 2019, where injuries continued to affect his consistency.
His future brightened though as he moved on to the Washington Wizards (2022–2023) and Boston Celtics (2023–2025), where he played in playoff games and won an NBA championship with the Celtics in 2024. Sadly, Porzingis, 31, hasn’t appeared in a game since the play-in tournament this past April. He averaged 16.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game for the Warriors last season. Now he has been diagnosed with an elongated health issue. However, according to ESPN his announcement is not an official retirement.

Porzingis posted more information about his decision on social media. He wrote:
“This season I was really looking forward to running it with this group, but as I ramped up, my body didn’t respond the way I anticipated,” Porzingis said in a statement. “I’m doing good, but I know what it takes, and I’m not where I want to be to perform at the level that I expect from myself. At this point, I’ve made the decision to prioritize my health and step away from the game I love. In this situation, I want to show the utmost respect for the Golden State Warriors and work with them to find a solution that makes sense. I’m thankful to my family and close ones for always being there. Much appreciation to all of you for the support.”
ESPN also stated that Porzingis has been dealing with persistent health issues after contracting a viral illness while in Boston two seasons ago and has suffered several leg injuries during an otherwise productive 11-year career. We hope things will turn out well for Porzingis as he deals with his medical issues.
