Kelsie Whitmore is the Number One Overall Pick of the Inaugural WPBL Draft
Women’s professional baseball is returning after more than 70 years. Hundreds tried out to be a part of history, but only a select few would be chosen to play for one of four teams. For instance, meet Kelsie Whitmore the number one overall pick of the inaugural WPBL Draft.
Kelsie is an immense talent and a great representation of why a women’s pro league is so needed. Whitmore has primarily played on men’s pro teams throughout her career. Becoming the first woman to start and to pitch in the MLB partner Atlantic League in 2022. Before also breaking multiple glass ceilings in the Pioneer League in 2024.
However, now the 27-year-old officially becomes the first member of a US women’s professional baseball league ball club. Since the legendary World War II-era AAGPBL folded in 1954.
In addition to being the historic top pick, Kelsie Whitmore was also named team captain of the San Francisco squad ahead of the league’s debut. Nonetheless, Whitmore, a two-way star and trailblazer made history on November 20, 2025, as the number one overall pick in the inaugural draft of the Women’s Pro Baseball League (WPBL).
Whitmore is well aware of the impact that she and all future members of the Women’s Professional Baseball League will have on young girls all over the globe. Five countries — Japan, South Korea, Canada, the Dominican Republic, and the US — represented in the first nine picks in Thursday’s WPBL Draft. And many other women from a number of countries will be drafted as well. Becoming ambassadors that will inspire the next generation. Regarding this Kelsie Whitmore states,
“[The WPBL is] not just for me, but for a lot of young girls. They now have a platform to look up to,” noted Whitmore. “Maybe my daughter one day will be able to play in the league.”

Yes, young women no longer have to be made to play softball. Baseball is officially a real option. Baseball at long last has returned to the diamond for women.
So then, what’s next? Well, now that the draft is complete, each team now has 30 players. However, there are now some serious decisions that will need to be made before August. The four debut WPBL teams will need to whittle their lineups down to 15 players before the inaugural 2026 season commences.
