How Many Fouls to Foul Out In The NBA?

It only takes one game of watching NBA basketball to hear the term “foul out” described as part of the action in the game. This can cause many new to NBA basketball fans; or viewers to ask what is a “foul?” And how many fouls make a player foul out in the NBA?

According to NBA rules, 6 fouls cause a player to become ineligible to return to the game; thus “fouling out.”  A “personal” foul is defined in NBA rules as “any violation of the rules of the game that involves personal contact with an opposing player.”

Often a player is temporarily taken out of the game when they get into “foul trouble.” Which means that in the judgement of the Coach, that the player is at risk of getting too many fouls. Not good. Especially, before the end of the game comes.

Therefore, this situation puts that player at risk to “foul out” or be disqualified from returning to the game if they aren’t temporarily taken out of the game.

Why care if a player fouls out of a game?

1. It can give one of the teams an advantage if they know another player will not be able to play in the game again. Moreover, if the player is a good defensive player, it could cause the opposing team to be more aggressive in trying to score points. Since they know that player won’t be there to steal the ball away from them; or block their scoring attempt.  The opposite can also happen. If a teams’ best offensive player fouls out of a game; it can cause the other team to feel safe playing more aggressive defense knowing that they aren’t going to get burned by that player that’s great at scoring points.

2. It can also affect how aggressive a player plays defense.  If a player is in “foul trouble” the opposing player will often know this; and run right at them on offense. Trying to score knowing that player will not try to stop them as much as normal. Since they are afraid of committing another personal foul. And possibly being removed from the game permanently.

3. Lastly, in most situations the Coach wants to have all of their players available for a key moment at the end of the game.  They usually would rather take them out early; if at risk in the game. So that they can use that player at a critical moment at the end of the game; when winning or losing is at stake.

Furthermore, understanding the NBA limit of 6 fouls includes benefits. It will add a lot of strategy and excitement the next time you watch an NBA game. You’ll notice more how players interact with each other. And try to take advantage of and take down their opponents.
