Green Bay Packers Placed Wide Receiver Jayden Reed on Injured Reserve Due to Neck Injury
The team is off to their first 1-2 start since 2014. They obviously have to play better on both offense and defense. However, doing that on the offensive side of the ball is going to be more difficult now. On September 20 a key component of their offense went down with a serious injury. As a result, the Green Bay Packers have placed wide receiver Jayden Reed on injured reserve due to a neck injury.
NFL Insider Adam Schefter posted about the sad news: “Packers are placing WR Jayden Reed on injured reserve due to his neck injury, per sources. Reed is out indefinitely if not for the season as he continues his recovery. He posted on IG today, “11 out.”
Matt LaFleur said Jayden Reed will undergo season-ending neck surgery.
The good news is that the injury is not considered career-ending. LaFleur also said that Reed will be out a significant amount of time. He also went on to express his feelings on the situation:
“Any time you go through a situation like that, it’s a pretty scary deal,” LaFleur said. “I didn’t even realize the magnitude at the time but certainly when I was out there [on the field] with him and seeing what was going on, it shocks you. It jolts you a little bit because you never want to see anybody in that position let alone one of your own guys.”
Unfortunately, Reed also suffered a broken collarbone last season that landed him on injured reserve. He was able to return in Week 14 and finish playing the rest of the season. Including the playoff loss to the Chicago Bears.

The workload will now expand for receivers Christian Watson and Matthew Golden without Reed. They lost Romeo Doubs in free agency, and they traded Dontavion Wicks to the Eagles. Over the first two weeks of the season Reed had four catches for 24 yards and no catches or receptions in Week 3 against the Atlanta Falcons. Both Watson and Golden have over 200 receiving yards thus far. They will need to keep up their production to help the team improve their 1-2 record.
As was pointed out by the Packers’ senior writer Wes Hodkiewicz, “The last time the Packers started 1-2 came at the tail end of a three-year stretch of doing so from 2012-14. Yet Green Bay went on to win the NFC North all three seasons, including the memorable 33-28 walk-off win over Chicago in the 2013 finale.”
Fortunately, it’s still early in the season so the Packers will have opportunities to turn things around. While they work on that we will wish a healthy and speedy recovery to Jayden Reed
