George Pickens of the Dallas Cowboys Has Agreed to Sign His Franchise Tag on a 1-Year Deal

The franchise tag was placed on him at the end of February this year. However, he didn’t sign the tag and his situation was left in limbo as everyone waited for the outcome. Now the situation can advance thanks to movement on his part. George Pickens of the Dallas Cowboys has agreed to sign his franchise tag on a 1-year deal. In fact, he signed the tag yesterday on the day of the beginning of the 2026 NFL Draft. He had until July 15 to sign the tag so why do it now?

For the Cowboys it was a pleasant surprise that Pickens signed so soon. For Pickens signing the tag fully guarantees Pickens’ salary at $27.3 million for the coming season. The signing took some people off guard who thought that Pickens and the Cowboys would part ways not being able to reach an agreement. But the Cowboys say that is untrue and led to this statement from Stephen Jones:

“We have no intention of moving George,” executive vice president and director of player personnel Stephen Jones said in the press conference following Day 1 of the NFL Draft. We’re fired up about him signing his [tag], because it means he’s ready to come in here and get to work. … We have zero intention of moving [him].”

Some had thought that the Cowboys would trade Pickens on Day 1 of the draft. But as we now know that didn’t happen. So, the Cowboys already have top-tier receiver CeeDee Lamb under contract at $34 million per year through the 2028 season. And prior to signing the franchise tag Pickens was expected to receive a contract somewhere around four-year’s worth more than $30 million per season.

Pickens has not been shy about making it known that he wants to stay in Dallas. He has a great relationship with fellow wide receiver CeeDee Lamb who the team has already paid a hefty contract. The two even had quite the night out last season in Las Vegas, lol. The pair have even spent a lot of the offseason together.

However, now that Pickens has signed his franchise tag and will be with the team for another season the Cowboys can turn their attention to the rest of the draft. Day one is in the books, and the Cowboys didn’t trade Pickens. They drafted safety Caleb Downs out of Ohio State with the 11th pick in the first round. Along with edge rusher Malachi Lawrence out of UCF with the 23rd pick. It appears they are more interested in shoring up the defensive side of the ball first. Therefore, we’ll have to wait and see how the drama unfolds with Pickens.
