Cleveland Browns Extended Contracts to Denzel Ward and Grant Delpit

They lost a key part of their defense when they traded Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams last month. But despite losing a valuable defensive player, the team has ensured that their defense will still have top-tier players. The Cleveland Browns extended contracts to Denzel Ward and Grant Delpit. Two days ago, Ward signed a two-year contract extension. And yesterday Delpit signed a three-year extension.

But NFL Insider Adam Schefter posted his details on social media, writing: “Sources: Browns safety Grant Delpit is signing a three-year extension worth $16 million per year that also includes $35 million guaranteed. David Mulugheta of Athletes First and the Browns finished off the agreement today. This will be Delpit’s third NFL contract and it ties him to Cleveland through the 2029 season.”

And he also posted about Denzel Ward, whose deal happened prior to Delpit’s. He posted: “Sources: Browns and five-time Pro-Bowl CB Denzel Ward reached agreement on a two-year, $62.2 million deal that includes $52.3 million guaranteed and makes him the highest-paid DB in NFL history for the second time in his career. Tory Dandy of Athletes First and the Browns put the finishing touches on the deal today before their training camp practices begin.”

Ward has been with the Browns for eight seasons and has established himself as one of the top cornerbacks in the league. He has recorded 361 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, 104 passes defensed, 18 interceptions, four forced fumbles, six fumble recoveries and half of a sack. Delpit has been with the Browns for six seasons. Over the last five seasons, Delpit has totaled 427 tackles, 6.5 sacks, seven interceptions, 21 passes defensed, three forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries.

Both coaches and players are happy to have both veterans staying with the team. One of them is defensive backs coach and pass game specialist Brandon Lynch. Regarding Ward he stated, “We talk about our heart being the connection between our brothers, and he’s somebody that every single day he comes in, he’s the standard as far as preparation, his effort, communication, things that we value,” Lynch said. 

Delpit’s teammates and pass game coordinator Ephraim Banda surrounded him to celebrate. “We’re in the middle of an individual and DT (Daniel Thomas) kind of looks at me and goes, ‘Hey coach, I think it went down,'” Banda recalled. “We saw it happen and we’re like well we’ve got to celebrate right now. So, it was just an opportunity to embrace him and to let him know how much we support him through everything, coaching staff, everyone. Just a really cool moment in time that happened really organically, which was a ton of fun.”
