You could feel it just coming. It was something in air. However, now Chicago has made one of the worst kept; but awesome secrets a reality. The Chicago Blackhawks name Connor Bedard the 37th Captain in Blackhawks history. Becoming the eighth-youngest player in NHL history to carry the “C” on his sweater.
The last three years have been a whirlwind of success for Bedard. From first overall pick at the 2023 NHL Draft to now being a captain. There’s been a lot of moments that shaped Connor Bedard’s journey to NHL Blackhawks captaincy.
Connor is elated to wear a “C.” To herald this achievement, Bedard wrote a column in The Players Tribune. Connor Bedard talks about what it means to him to be named Blackhawks Captain, what Nick Foligno’s impact was on him in his first seasons, and the change in energy around the team that started last season. But specifically regarding becoming Chicago’s captain he states,
“As I try to put in words what it means to me to be the next Chicago Blackhawks captain.
I love this game so much, you know? Like I remember sitting there back in July, about to sign my extension, and thinking to myself, ‘Man….. I really hope they can’t hear my thoughts right now. Because I’d probably play for free.’ But that’s just how it’s always been for me with hockey. Whether it’s playing on the pond with my dad as a kid growing up in BC, or in the United Center for a Blackhawks game, or at a local rink for the Chicago beer league I hope I’m in like 30 years from now, I’m never not going to feel lucky to put on a pair of hockey skates.
Being named captain of the Blackhawks is an unbelievable honor and something I’m truly humbled by. The captains who have come before me have left an incredible legacy. To now have the opportunity to carry that tradition forward is something I don’t take lightly. I’m grateful to the organization and my teammates for putting their trust in me to lead this team. We’re building something really special here, and I’m committed to making the entire Blackhawks organization and our fans proud.”
Chicago Blackhawks Name Connor Bedard the 37th Captain in Blackhawks History
Bedard is an elite, high-scoring young forward in the NHL. Winning the Calder Memorial Trophy as the league’s top rookie in 2024. Leading the Blackhawks in scoring through his first three seasons. All while setting a career high with 75 points (30 goals, 45 assists) in 69 games during the 2025–26 campaign.
Overall, last year Bedard was one of 45 NHL players to score at least 30 goals and one of 43 to collect at least 45 assists. Finishing 36th in league scoring despite missing 13 games. He now becomes the youngest captain in the league, but he showed he was ready for it last season.
