Carlos Alcaraz Defending Champion in Rome and Roland Garros—Pulls Out Due to Wrist Injury
An injury that has been lingering for quite a bit, is now fully taking its toll. One of men’s tennis biggest stars is now having to pull out of not one, but two major tournaments. Carlos Alcaraz the defending champion in both Rome and Roland Garros, is pulling out of both due to his ongoing right wrist injury.
Alcaraz made the extremely difficult announcement regarding his decision to not participate at Roland Garros or Rome. He says,
“After the results of the tests carried out today, we have decided that the most prudent thing is to be cautious and not participate in Rome and Roland Garros, while we wait to assess the evaluation to decide when we will return to the court. It’s a complicated moment for me, but I’m sure we’ll come out stronger from here.”
Tons of support from fans, legends and the tennis community poured in from all over for Carlos. For instance, the official online page for the Roland-Garros tournament stated, “Some heartbreaking news as Carlos Alcaraz, our 2024 and 2025 champion, will not be able to defend his title at Roland-Garros 2026 due to a wrist injury. Wishing you all the best in your recovery Carlitos, we’ll miss you.”
Additionally, Rafael Nadal posted, “Keep it up, Carlos! I hope you have the quickest recovery possible. These moments of difficulty highlight everything you’re doing. Much strength and a big hug!”

Jannik Sinner also took a moment to discuss Carlos Alcaraz’s withdrawal from Roland Garros. Sinner did not seem to enjoy the media’s relentless questioning on Alcaraz’s situation; perhaps deeming it was too soon talk about. However, he was very gracious with his words and response. Regarding Carlos, Sinner said,
“It’s sad for tennis. You always want to play the best in the world. He’s definitely the best in the world on this surface.. I wish him to recover as fast as possible.”
Alcaraz, is ranked as the world No. 2 and is the two-time defending French Open champion. Alcaraz received treatment on his right wrist and forearm during a first-round win at the Barcelona Open, on April 14. His clay-court season ended a day later when he pulled out of that tournament, then withdrew from the Madrid Open, which started April 20. Shortly after withdrawing, Alcaraz told reporters at the Laureus Awards in Madrid that he would not rush back from the injury for the sake of defending his French Open title, because it could harm his longterm prospects. Wish you the best Carlos!
