Broadcasting Legend Ernie Johnson Stepping Away From “Inside the NBA” After 37 Years
Four decades of basketball history. An era is coming to an end. Broadcasting legend Ernie Johnson is stepping away from “Inside the NBA” after 37 unforgettable years at the end of the season. Johnson was inducted into the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame in 2023 alongside his iconic Inside the NBA crew, Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith, and Shaquille O’Neal.
Johnson has hosted since 1990. Barkley has been there more than 25 years. ESPN added five more episodes of Inside the NBA this season, up to 25 in the regular season. Since it’s the most popular studio show in the sport.
ESPN Chairman, Jimmy Pitaro, on Johnson stepping away:
“Ernie Johnson is one of sports media’s most respected and beloved figures. For more than three decades, he has been the heart of Inside the NBA, helping create one of the most iconic and entertaining studio shows in sports. We are grateful for Ernie’s extraordinary contributions and look forward to celebrating him throughout the season.”
Johnson, 70, shared the news Wednesday (Oct. 28) in a video posted to his X account, revealing that his decision comes after 37 seasons with the award-winning program and recent health challenges that have changed his outlook on life. “After 37 seasons, it’s time,” Johnson said.
Furthermore, Ernie Johnson continued,
“I’ve always prided myself on my preparation. The hours I put in every day getting ready for the next show. I’ve always loved that part of my job. I always vowed if that ever became more of a challenge than it is a joy. I’ll know it’s time to step away. After 37 seasons, it’s time.
Just to be clear, I’m not retiring. Just cutting back. I’ll still do March Madness and other projects for TNT and CBS, and I’ve just started a new production company called 32 Bowties geared toward telling feel-good stories in sports. So this is by no means the end. It’s just a turning of the page.”
Johnson also revealed that he’s been dealing with heart issues for the past two years and underwent bypass surgery 14 months ago. Although he said he’s feeling great, he’s still working to get his heart functioning the way it should. The health scare has also made him appreciate spending time with his wife and family even more.
