Pop the bottles! The season looked mighty grim around the All Star break. However, this ball club refused to lay down and go out without a fight. They truly battled and won. The Boston Red Sox clinch a wild card after a historic season comeback. With an Astros loss to the Atlanta Braves, the Red Sox punch a ticket to the playoffs.
At the beginning of the season Boston looked to go down as one the worst Sox rosters ever assembled. In their first 78 games, the offense ranked near the bottom of the majors in runs scored, home runs, slugging percentage, and overall OPS. Then suddenly things clicked.
At one point, Boston looked to be a trade-deadline seller. However, the franchise decided to go in the opposite direction. The Red Sox wound up buying; such as attaining the services of catcher, Adley Rutschman (formerly with the Baltimore Orioles). Then, after an incredible summer; the Red Sox found themselves right back into the postseason hunt. That hunt is now in the history books as a success. Boston is a WILD CARD.
Yes, after being 14 games under .500 in June, the Red Sox are shipping up to the Postseason. They are now the first team to lose 46 of their first 78 games and finish above .500. While also becoming the 4th team in history to make it to the postseason after falling as many as 14 games under .500. And they are returning to the postseason in back to back seasons.

From a 9.4% chance on June 24th, to 100% on September 20th. What a turnaround by Boston. First time since 2018 they’ve gone back to back seasons getting to the playoffs.
A lot was due to the team being able to still win even without a home advantage. The Red Sox finish with a 46-35 record on the road in 2026. The Red Sox have the 4th-best winning percentage on the road in MLB this season. 2nd-best in the AL behind the Yankees. The Red Sox were 41-40 on the road in 2025.
According to Sarah Langs, “The Red Sox join the 1914 Miracle Braves, 1974 Pirates and 2005 Astros as the only teams to reach the postseason after falling as many as 14 games under .500.”
