Baltimore Ravens Quarterback Lamar Jackson Started New Season on a Tear but Without a Contract Extension
He entered year four of a five-year contract today. The $260 million contract includes $185 million in guaranteed money and expires at the end of next season. So, it was important to get a new contract done before the regular season began. However, that didn’t happen despite that being the wish of the team owner. Therefore, Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson started the new season on a tear but without a contract extension. As usual Lamar Jackson has been more concerned with being the best player that he can be.
After an injury riddled season in 2025 his statistics weren’t as good as we had come to expect. And his critics took the opportunity to make disparaging remarks about him as if there was something wrong with his playing abilities. They had a field day lambasting him and making unfair analyses of his strengths and talents. But through it all Jackson kept his opinions to himself. However, Ravens owner, Steve Bisciotti, had said earlier this year what he hoped for.
“We’ve got free agents and I don’t want to go into free agency with that hanging overhead,” Bisciotti said nearly eight months ago in January. “And I made that clear to Lamar and I think he was very appreciative of my stance and hopefully willing to work with [Ravens general manager] Eric [DeCosta] and not get this thing dragged out into April like the last time. It’s very hard for him to build a roster when that thing is not settled.”
Nevertheless, here we are at Week 1 of the NFL season and no deal was done. We’ll have to wait until after it ends before anything could be done to get a new deal for Lamar. In the meantime, it was business as usual for Jackson who was very much his MVP caliber self today in the Ravens against the Indianapolis Colts.

Some referred to Jackson as a magician based on his first performance in 2026. He orchestrated a 41-23 blowout win over the Colts, completing 17 of 25 passes with 324 yards and 2 touchdowns. Getting in on the big win was running back Derrick Henry who had 144 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Henry surpassed Marcus Allen for the third-most rushing touchdowns in NFL history. Not to be outdone was wide receiver Zay Flowers who had 150 receiving yards. It looks like the Ravens have a pretty good offense. But what will it be if they don’t keep Jackson?
Hopefully, that is something Ravens fans won’t have to contemplate after this season ends. Not only would it give Lamar a chance to finish his career in Baltimore. But he could also become the NFL’s first $70 million-per-year player. For now, we can sit back and enjoy the Lamar Jackson show this season.
