Washington Commanders Defeat Saints Achieving First Winning Season Since 2016
Washington has come a long way. Over the years winning has seemed somewhat elusive to the football organization. However, this year has been different. The team is firing on much different cylinders and gelling together to secure victories. On Sunday, this squad officially arrived in a new era, the Washington Commanders defeat the New Orleans Saints achieving their first winning season since 2016.
So then, the drought is over. It took almost a decade but it looks the Commanders are finally turning the ship around. And headed to much greener football pastures.
The vibe definitely began to change this year after Washington hired coach Dan Quinn (the former Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, helped direct one of the league’s best defenses in 2023); and drafted their stellar quarterback, Jayden Daniels. In the 2024 NFL draft Daniels went in round one, the number two overall pick. Grabbing Jayden that high in the draft the Commanders knew they were getting an athlete who would be proficient and effective on the field. However, the Heisman winner proved his worth and then some.
As of just a month ago, Jayden Daniels’ rookie stats so far were: 2,338 pass yards, 10 TD, 3 INT, 482 rushing yards and 4 rushing TD. Additionally, Daniels is the first player in NFL history to pass for at least 1,000 yards and rush for at least 250 in his first five career games. Daniels only trails two-time MVP Lamar Jackson in rushing yards among QBs, running for 464 yards. His four touchdowns are tied for second among quarterbacks, with Steelers QB Justin Fields leading the way so far.
Furthermore, if you’re still on the fence about the difference Daniels is truly making with Washington. Keep in mind that last season the Commanders had a 4-13 record. This season they are sitting at 9-5. An improvement indeed.

Yet, of course, there are other shining stars in the Commanders’ roster, like Terry McLaurin. Washington wanted to get Terry the ball more this season and it has paid off. This year the team is now 7-3 when he gets at least 50 yards.
McLaurin is also the first Washington wide receiver to have 10 or more touchdown receptions since Gary Clark did so in 1991. And his four multi-touchdown games are the second-most in the NFL this season trailing only Cincinnati’s Ja’Marr Chase. McLaurin is on pace to hit a career-high 1,172 yards.
So as one can see, the Commanders are looking good. And the franchise is now aiming to end another drought. They have no recent Super Bowl championships. Washington’s last SB win occurred over 30 years ago; back in 1992.
