The draft is not just about pick selections; sometimes it involves a little trading in order for team’s to get the guy they really want. Therefore, here is our 2024 NFL Draft First Round Summary: All the Trading Action and More Offense!

Yes, the first round of the 2024 NFL draft is in the books and it was a record night. So then, before we get to the trades. Let’s first quickly summarize the highlights of the big evening.

For the first time in NFL Draft history, five quarterbacks were drafted in the first ten picks. Plus, six out of the top twelve picks were quarterbacks. Furthermore, this tied the record for the most quarterbacks drafted in the first round ever with the legendary 1983 draft class. A class that featured Hall of Fame Quarterbacks John Elway, Jim Kelly and Dan Marino.

Moreover, speaking of records; for the first time ever, the first fourteen draft picks were offensive players. The previous record for offensive players taken to open a draft was seven in 2021.  In fact, never before have fourteen offensive players in a row been picked at any point in the first round. Nevertheless, the streak, finally ended when Laiatu Latu, an edge rusher on defense; was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts tonight with the fifteenth overall draft pick.

In total, twenty -three offensive players were taken in the first round…the most ever.  The previous record for most offensive players drafted in the first round was nineteen in 2009, 2004 and originally in 1968.

Nonetheless, to get the job done; some teams had to trade up. Therefore, let’s now quickly recap the trades that went down. There aren’t too many. But, they are major.

For instance, due to the way the quarterbacks were being taken, the Minnesota Vikings HAD to trade up to get one. The Detroit Lions decided to take a page from Minnesota’s book and they switch picks with the Cowboys. They had their heart set on cornerback Terrion Arnold from Alabama. Due to their quick thinking they get their guy as well.
