Timberwolves Defeat OKC in Overtime After Trailing 25 Points—Historic NBA Comeback!
The CHAOS! Watching this matchup it looked like the Thunder just had things all sown up. They were in control until about halfway through the fourth quarter. Then the tide SHIFTS. Minnesota comes back swinging a hammer and ties things up forcing and declaring an overtime war. In an shocking twist, the Timberwolves defeat the OKC Thunder in overtime after trailing by 25 Points—this is a historic NBA comeback that has NEVER been seen. And this game is tied for the largest comeback in Wolves history.
Yes, with just minutes to go in regulation, the Timberwolves erase the Thunder’s lead with all the quickness. What happened? Well suddenly, OKC goes ice cold Gatorade on offense. Additionally, on defense they begin to falter as well. This is not a formula or winning recipe for finishing strong in a game.
Due to such developments, the Wolves went hunting and take full advantage of OKC’s sudden disappearance on both sides of the ball. In a brilliant performance, the Timberwolves go on to outscore the Thunder 41-19 in the 4th quarter. Your eyes do not fail you; you read that last sentence correctly. When the game is over, Edwards is even left telling the media, “That was crazy. I’m not gonna lie.”
Want to know one more thing that’s wild about this game? Minnesota went on a 16-0 run WITHOUT Anthony Edwards, who was subbed out at the 3:41 mark of the fourth quarter. Most likely because Minnesota coach Chris Finch, like everyone else, figured the game was over.

In overtime, all you need to know is that both teams had opportunities to win or go up. There were a lot of misses. So nerves could have been at play. But also there was some very good defensive efforts by both sides.
With about ten seconds to go, the scoreboard is in the Wolves favor. Minnesota is up by just ONE point. Nevertheless, it looked like SGA was going to be the hero but then Anthony Edwards comes through with a killer block! And the Wolves recover the ball.
Minnesota takes the rest of their timeouts, inbounds the ball and makes OKC chase them in the backcourt for around four seconds before fouling them. The Timberwolves are successful at the free throw line meaning that now the Thunder needs a three to tie the game. Tall order, but there is time. Six seconds are still on the clock.
OKC takes a timeout to draw up a play. Then it’s do or die time… Shai gets the ball, he sets himself for a three-pointer and shoots… he misses! OKC has let this game get away from them. This is honestly one of the best comebacks we have seen in awhile. And it had historical significance. As confirmed by OptaStats:
“Tonight the Timberwolves
were:– down by 20+ points entering the 4th
– on the road
– facing a team with an .800+ win pct
No other team in NBA history has been in that situation and come back to win the game.”
But OKC is still in good shape as they stand on top of the western conference with a record of 46-11. Nevertheless, the Timberwolves make history and win it, 131-128. And they continue to inch closer to the Clippers, Rockets and Lakers. So then, this is going to be a fun stretch of basketball to decide the playoff picture!
