His short NFL career has been marked by controversy. From being drafted in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft to being slotted behind fellow 2025 NFL draft quarterback Dillon Gabriel. Now there is talk about what happens to him next. Especially since Shedeur Sanders hired an agent, will the Cleveland Browns be trading him? Particularly since starting quarterback Deshaun Watson has played well to start the 2026 NFL season.
The Browns have four quarterbacks on their roster. In addition to Watson, Sanders and Gabriel, they also have rookie Taylen Green. Dillon Gabriel was activated from injured reserve Monday. To make room for him on the roster they waived seventh-round tight end Carsen Ryan. Should the Browns to keep four quarterbacks on the roster? If not, then who should go?
Some have compared Sanders recent action of hiring an agent to that of Marvin Harrison Jr. Harrison had recently hired an agent and then the Arizona Cardinals traded him to the Houston Texans just last week. If Sanders is following Harrison’s playbook, then perhaps, he is seeking a trade. On the other hand, some feel that Gabriel could be traded. Andrew Buller-Russ suggested the following:
The Cleveland Browns may not yet know whether Deshaun Watson is worth investing another year in, but they don’t need four quarterbacks on the roster. Dillon Gabriel could be the odd man out after making Taylen Green a sixth-round pick in April. While the Browns just invested a third-round pick in Gabriel last year, former fifth-round selection Shedeur Sanders seems to have overtaken him. While the Browns may not get anything more than a sixth-round pick in return, it’s better than cutting Gabriel and getting nothing in return now that he’s been activated from IR and may need the valuable roster spot elsewhere.

If the Browns decide to trade Sanders what would the compensation be for him? Recently the Minnesota Vikings traded J.J. McCarthy to the New York Giants for a fifth-round pick, so some might say that Sanders can fetch a similar return. On the other hand, some feel that Cleveland would be lucky to get even a sixth-round pick next year for Sanders.
Nevertheless, the Browns may want to keep Sanders in case Watson can’t stay healthy. Watson hadn’t played since October 2024, when the first of his two Achilles injuries occurred. He’s also in the last year of a five-year, $230 million contract. And owner Jimmy Haslam labeled extension talk way premature last week. But given the drama that has surrounded Sanders since entering the NFL he may just want a fresh start. However, thus far he has remained positive about his situation.
