Red Sox and Diamondbacks—Contracts With Garrett Crochet and Kristian Campbell Plus Ketel Marte
Teams continue to shell out the dollars to secure key players. Out in California the Padres locked down Jackson Merrill; and Boston as well as Arizona are going down the same team building and structuring path. The Red Sox and Diamondbacks agree to contracts with Garrett Crochet and Kristian Campbell plus Ketel Marte.
It is clear that the Sox were very zeroed in on pitching and shoring up their infield/outfield. You cannot win a championship without great defense; and that includes hurlers who can throw strikes and keep batters from scoring. Therefore, Boston worked to get a deal done with not only a lefty pitcher; but with guy who can play multiple positions.
On Monday, it was announced that the Red Sox would be in agreement with LHP Garrett Crochet on a six year, $170 million extension. And that would not be the only deal solidified this week. Come Wednesday another signature would be put in ink. This time with INF/OF Kristian Campbell (MLB’s No. 6 overall prospect) to an 8-year deal through 2032 with club options in ’33 and ’34.
This feels fast. And it is lightning speed. Since after spending less than a week in the Majors; Campbell has signed one of the earliest contract extensions in MLB history.
Campbell is a 2023 draft pick that literally went from High-A to Triple-A. Kept impressing the Red Sox organization and is now in the majors. Campbell recorded six hits in his first four games. Including his first home run on Saturday against the Rangers; a Statcast-projected 431-foot shot that left his bat at 112.2 mph.

Over in Arizona, it is all eyes on Ketel Marte. And for good reason. Marte has been absolutely raking for the Diamondbacks. For instance, Marte, 31, finished in third place in National League Most Valuable Player voting last year. After hitting 36 home runs with 95 RBIs and a .932 OPS. Additionally, in the 2023 postseason he hit .329 with two homers to help lead the D-backs to the NL pennant.
For these reasons and more the Dbacks and Marte now agree to a 6-year, $116.5M extension with a 2031 player option. How did this extension finish coming together? General manager Mike Hazen explains,
“The process has been an ongoing conversation for the last few weeks. He expressed a desire to want to continue to stay here. We’ve kind of talked to him about that. We kind of went back and forth on what the terms could look like and things happened from there.”
Well, looks like all parties are happy. Teams have their guys and these athletes received lucrative compensation. Now we wait to see what other moves ball clubs make in order to stay and become more competitive.
