Philadelphia 76ers Win Game 7—First Playoff Series Win Over Boston Since 1982

44 years in the making! A playoff comeback for the ages. Yes, this moment means something to Philly and their fans. The Philadelphia 76ers win Game 7 for their first playoff series win over Boston since 1982.

According to the National Basketball Association history books, the 76ers are the first No. 7 seed in the East to defeat a No. 2 seed since the first round expanded to best-of-seven in 2003. They are also the 14th team in NBA history to overcome a 3-1 deficit to win a series.

However, over on the Boston side, things are a much different story. The Celtics are the first team to have three different starters (Luka Garza, Baylor Scheierman, Ron Harper Jr.) with 0 points in a playoff game since starters were first tracked in 1970-71. Yikes.

Furthermore, it wasn’t just that Boston had players who couldn’t seem to score. They also couldn’t seem to stop Philadelphia from racking up points either. Offensively and defensively Boston was not at their best. Joel Embiid was one of the 76ers top scorers, helping to move the franchise to the next round. Jaylen Brown on Joel Embiid:

“We didn’t really have an answer for him…He’s a big body. He also was flopping around. He got some extra calls and stuff like that, and they rewarded him for that. But that’s the league that we’re in.”

Speaking of Embiid, now that his team has officially eliminated the Celtics, his thoughts have already moved on to his next opponent. The New York Knicks. Joel has one simple plea or request for Philadelphia fans,

He explained to the media, “I just have a message for our fans. Last time we played the Knicks, it felt like this was Madison Square Garden east. We’re going to need the support. Don’t sell your tickets. This is bigger than you. If you need money, I got you.” Game 1 of 76ers versus Knicks begins Monday evening.
