Peter Seidler Celebration of Life- Remembering the Legend; Even in MLB The Show 24
He was HIM. San Diego’s late owner changed the game and demonstrated that middle market teams can “go for it” and he helped set the Padres on the trajectory to not only make the playoffs; but continue on strong in the quest for winning their first championship. At today’s Peter Seidler Celebration of Life ceremony; all of San Diego gathered to remember one of the greatest owners in sports history.
He dared… to care. In a history of selling off players, pinching pennies and not always investing in the fan experience. Some owners burn in the minds of individuals for all the wrong reasons. While other owners transcend and float up to beloved territory.
Peter is and was loved. And he always will be. Seidler put his money firmly on the table in the name of transforming San Diego into a winner. Not just a team that would be good for a time; but the foreseeable future. He also continued to make improvements to the Padres home; Petco Park. So that fans would have a crown jewel to showcase to the rest of the baseball world.
A beautiful city. With a beautiful park. And a beautiful owner. The good times seemed to happen and fly by so fast; but really; Peter is just the beginning.
San Diego Padres Remember Peter Seidler
The 2024 MLB season is now upon us; and the dream and goal is unchanged. WIN. That is the city’s and organization’s goal. And it was Peter’s biggest pursuit.
The Padres are firm and carrying the torch and we can see it thus far in their decisions and level of play. During the offseason AJ Preller has the tough task of resetting the taxes and dealing with an extremely “limited” budget. Yet, he makes some trades, hands out some spring training invitations; and the Padres stay in the race for contention.
The bullpen is deeper and thanks from dipping in the farm; there’s more bat power to unleash. During the Seoul Series against the Dodgers; the Padres split the long-awaited matchup 1-1. Having led Game 1 till the 8th (blast that hole in Jake’s glove). And historically beating LA in Game 2 with 15 runs. So far, the ball club is making a humongous case to be taken seriously this season. Therefore, don’t count this team out, Peter Seidler never did.
GM AJ Preller even tells the crowd today of one of the last times he met with Peter. And how he prayed for the success of the team. Preller’s well-timed humor helps to speak to Peter’s own personality and love for the team. When Cubs media asked about seeing AJ and Pete on the field praying, Preller tells them that’s exactly what they saw; and laughingly jokes to them, “We’re trying to do everything we can to win here in San Diego!” Classic.
Moreover, the SD franchise is still going to do all they can to be champions. New manager Mike Shildt mentions at the ceremony,
“I’m gonna do everything in my fabric so on this same area when we celebrate our first world championship it’ll be for Peter Seidler.”
That’s the spirit Shildty. Moreover, Spencer Soicher for ABC 10 News caught up with Dave Winfield; to also discuss Peter’s impact. Spencer reports,
“Former Padre Dave Winfield on Peter Seidler and his legacy in San Diego:
“Everybody I know has great admiration, great respect for him. I appreciate what he’s brought to San Diego, not only for the team, but the community.”
Nice sentiments. Peter’s ceremonial celebration included many notable speakers as well. Such as: Eric Kutsenda, Erik Greupner, Trevor Hoffman, Alicia Gwynn, AJ Preller, Mike Shildt, Manny Machado, Joe Musgrove and Tom Seidler.

Furthermore, during the ceremony the Padres organization also revealed the Peter Seidler heart logo and where it will be proudly displayed inside the Petco Park Stadium. If visiting in the future, once inside; be sure to raise your eyes up towards the press box. You will be able to see this legacy emblem right near Tony Gwynn’s number.
Moreover, Petco is not the only place where ‘Papa Pete’s’ legend will live on. The MLB took great care to ensure this detail would be included in their latest video game edition. Yes, in MLB the Show 2024, gamers will notice the PS (Peter Seidler) heart patches on all the jerseys of the Padres players in the game.
We thought this was a very nice, classy touch from MLB The Show. And a great attention to all the small details of the game. Perfection.
