New York Mets Stun Phillies in Game One of NLDS
They were just six outs away from securing the opening game of the series. Then everything suddenly took a sharp dip into the opposite direction. After a dominant performance by Zach Wheeler, the New York Mets stun the Phillies in Game One of NLDS.
Seriously, New York had no answers for Wheeler during Saturday’s bout. Zach tossed an absolute gem. Keeping the Mets from scoring as well as protecting a one score lead for seven innings.
Early on in the game Kyle Schwarber had put the Phillies on top with a massive home run. For basically all of the game that was the only score on the board. What the Mets needed was Wheeler out of the picture. And in the eighth inning the Mets get there wish.
In the eighth not only do the Mets’ bats come alive but they break the game wide open. New York scores five runs on five hits. However, what’s even crazier and impressive is that these 5 straight Mets fell behind in the count 0-2. But still, Francisco Lindor worked a walk, Vientos a RBI Single, Nimmo also a RBI Single, Alonso came through with a big Sac Fly, then Iglesias with another single dagger. New York would end up winning, 6-2.
The Mets are now the third team in National League history to win back-to-back playoff games after trailing in the eighth inning or later. In the history books they will join the 1980 Phillies and the 1999 Mets, who did it in NLCS Games 4 and 5 against the Braves.

But really no one should be surprised by the Mets ability to keep coming back. Even when they are down and have ground to make up. They are a ball club that has been doing this very thing all year. In fact, this is their 44th comeback win. Which is the most in Major League Baseball (in both the regular season and postseason). Therefore, it is clear, they are definitely a team with grit and determination to keep fighting no matter what the score reads.
Brandon Nimmo who had a 2-RBI night against the Phillies spoke on the team’s self belief. He states,
“We believe in ourselves and we know that if we just keep pressing on the dam, eventually it will break.
This is what I dreamed about as a kid, so I’m just going to go enjoy every moment of this.”
New York is definitely turning up the pressure on teams. This series is going to be a good one. Zach Wheeler’s pitching in game one was stellar, and so was the Mets tenacity to keep fighting. Another great, unpredictable game. These two teams will next play each other again on Sunday.
