New England Patriots Signed Christian Barmore To Extension
Now that the draft is over more attention is being paid to the veterans. Teams are now taking care of the players they already have. So it’s no surprise that the New England Patriots signed DT Christian Barmore to a lucrative extension as reported by Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald. Adam Schefter also posted that, “the Patriots reached agreement on a four-year deal with a maximum value of $92 million. The deal was negotiated and confirmed by Nicole Lynn, of Klutch Sports.” And rounding out the details, Jeremy Fowler posted that, “Christian Barmore’s new deal with the #Patriots is worth $41.8 million in guarantees, per source. Patriots had been working on it for a while, now it’s done.”
Barmore was drafted by the Patriots in the 2nd round (38th pick overall) of the 2021 NFL Draft. They used two fourth round picks to move up and get him. And they haven’t regretted that decision. Barmore was a disruptive force on the defensive line in his rookie year with his 9 QB hits, showing great future potential. Despite being hampered by an injury in his second season, he had a breakout in his third season. He posted 8.5 sacks, 13 tackles for loss, and 16 QB hits with six batted passes in 17 games. His explosive play helped to take up the slack when Matthew Judon was lost for the season.
Head coach Jerod Mayo recognized Barmore’s growth last year when he was the linebackers coach. “He works hard. He’s doing the extra stuff,” Mayo said. “He’s doing the little things and that’s starting to show up and pay divideds. He definitely has a bright future, and hopefully he can keep it rolling.”

With this extension being done, it appears the Patriots have locked in their defense. According to Patriots.com, “the Patriots prioritized long-term deals this offseason for 2020 picks Michael Onwenu (three years, $57 million), Kyle Dugger (four years, $58 million) and Anfernee Jennings (three years).” Also Adam Schefter noted that Barmore’s extension is the largest non-Tom-Brady contract in Patriots franchise history.
And the players appear to be happy with the things the Patriots are doing. Edge rusher Josh Uche turned down a more lucrative contract from another team to stay with the Patriots. Of course the defense was not the problem last year. Their struggling offense never could get on track. Now that they have drafted their quarterback maybe they can start to turn things around. At any rate the defense should be ready to roll next season.
