NBA Players Malik Beasley and Ed Davis Have Been Indicted in Sports Gambling Case
Desperately making plays in the final seconds of a game. Snapchat message exchanges. Manipulating performances in order to change various matchup outcomes. Gambling is unfortunately luring athletes to make questionable decisions in order to make tens of thousands per bet. Case in point, former NBA players Malik Beasley and Ed Davis have been indicted in a sports gambling case.
When it comes to the actions of Beasley this does not look to be a one time incident. It is a betting issue that occurred multiple times over the course of several years. Prosecutors say Beasley lost millions gambling during his 9-year NBA career and manipulated his own performance in games to help pay off resulting debts. The indictment included examples of wagers totaling more than $75,000 with net winnings of at least $121,000.
Mike Vorkunov of The Athletic offered a brief of additional details this past Monday morning. Vorkunov mentioned,
“Malik Beasley and Ed Davis, both former NBA players, have been indicted on sports gambling charges by federal prosecutors. DOJ says Beasley agreed to manipulate his play during a Jan. 26, 2024 game while with the Bucks, and worked with Davis.
Beasley is accused of also working with bettors to hit the over on some of his stats. They bet on him to hit the over on rebounds in a March 10 Bucks-Clippers game. He did that in the last few seconds. The group celebrated afterward.”
Now that Beasley has been indicted, next step is for him to surrender to the authorities. ESPN’s Shams Charania reports,
“Nine-year NBA veteran Malik Beasley has been indicted on federal charges for gambling related to a sports betting scheme, such as point shaving and prop bets, his attorney Steve Haney tells ESPN. The government is coordinating a voluntary surrender of Beasley this week.”

Moreover, it is being asserted that when he was playing for the Milwaukee Bucks in 2024, Beasley agreed to tailor his performance based on betting trends in those games, prosecutors have alleged. Malik Beasley and Ed Davis, as well as an NBA agent are included among the six defendants indicted Monday (June 29) on charges related to an alleged sports betting scheme that targeted at least four games during the 2023-24 season.
Davis and co-defendants Rob Gorodetsky, Ernesto Plascencia and William Brown were arrested Monday, according to a spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York. Beasley and defendant Paolo Zamorano, who was Davis’ agent, were not in custody as of Monday morning.
