Los Angeles Lakers Search For Next Coach Expands
Behind every competitive team; is a strong presence head coach. Such an influence provides stability and invokes confidence within players. With this in mind the Los Angeles purple and gold are searching for their next coach, and expanding their scope and radius WIDE. They wish to make a very smart decision and get the franchise back on track with not just making the playoffs; but going deep into them.
The Lakers fired Darvin Ham because they felt he had lost the team based on comments by Lebron James and Anthony Davis. However, despite being quick to fire; they did not have a replacement lined up and already in place. So then, they are beginning the process of talking to everyone they feel is qualified to lead.
Moreover, the basketball franchise is also receiving a little help in this regard. Some assistance to weigh the strengths of each candidate. They have brought in Hall of Fame former Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski as an unofficial consultant to help with the coaching search. What’s an important aspect of the coaching criteria they are looking for and considering?
Lakers Search For New Head Coach
Well, the Lakers are looking for an experienced coach both Anthony Davis and Lebron James respect to hopefully win a title this coming season. Not only do they want a coach to optimize the chance Lebron and Anthony Davis have to win a title in the next year or two, but they are also looking for an individual to last a few years through to after Lebron retires and the Lakers will be Anthony Davis’ team.
Sports reporter, Rachel Nichols; has made the tv show rounds highlighting the Lakers have had 6 coaches in 13 years. Which is not exactly the recipe for long term winning. Therefore, Los Angeles is looking to change that with the next hire.
Who are the candidates so far? When asked by Jim Rome on his show, Ramona Shelborne mentioned the name, Kenny Atkinson. An assistant under Steve Kerr with the Golden State Warriors (a team that has won many championships, most recently 2022). He has come up as a possible candidate. By the way, Atkinson also coached the Brooklyn Nets from 2016-2020.
Additionally, multiple reports say the Lakers are said to be interested in ESPN Analyst JJ Redick despite his lack of coaching experience. Redick was coached at Duke by Mike Krzyzewski and also hosts a podcast called “Mind the Game” with Lebron James.

Moreover, the Lakers have also received permission to interview several other assistant coaches:
- New Orleans’s James Borrego; who coached the Charlotte Hornets from 2018-2022p
- Denver Nugget’s David Adelman, son of former Minnesota Timberwolves coach Rick Adelman; who is Michael Malone’s lead assistant coach.
- Boston’s Sam Cassell who won 3 NBA titles as a player.
- Minnesota Timberwolves lead assistant, Micah Nori
- Miami Heat assistant Chris Quinn who comes from the Eric Spoelstra coaching tree in Miami. He is a coach that Lebron won 2 titles with and has a lot of respect for, though he left for Cleveland before Quinn arrived in Miami.
That’s a lot of names. A lot of choices. But, the interviewing process is now beginning.
At this point nobody really has a clear idea of who will be the next coach, nor how long the search will take. What is known is that LA wants a coach with experience to win now, to stay there for a long time; AND they want Lebron James to come back to the team, they are even willing to draft Bronny James to further appeal to Lebron, who can become a free agent. There are a lot of moving parts, but this Lakers coaching hire may be the most important hire they have had to make in a long time.
