Ezekiel Elliott Gets His Wish To Be Released By The Cowboys
He spent seven seasons with the Dallas Cowboys after being drafted fourth overall in the 2015 NFL Draft. Then he spent one year with the New England Patriots but that didn’t work out. So he returned to Dallas to be reunited with quarterback Dak Prescott. However, now Ezekiel Elliott gets his wish to be released by the Cowboys. According to the team’s website, Elliott requested his release and the Cowboys honored it. Elliott was then subject to waivers in the hopes of landing with a playoff contender for the remainder of the season.
Dallas Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones released the following statement:
“Out of respect and appreciation for Zeke and wanting to provide him with an opportunity to pursue any potential playoff participation possible, we are releasing him from the Cowboys roster today. As I have said many times previously, Zeke’s impact as one of the greatest to ever play with the Star on their helmet will never change and is etched in our record books and history forever. We thank him, love him and wish him the absolute best.”
This time around, Elliott played in 15 games with 74 carries, 226 yards and three touchdowns. He also had 12 receptions for 69 yards and one lost fumble. Not exactly a great outing for the running back. And prior to the Cowboys’ Week 9 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons, Elliott was suspended due to disciplinary reasons including missing meetings. However, this season doesn’t change the history Elliott has with the team.
Elliott has the third most rushing yards (8,488) and rushing touchdowns (71) in franchise history. Even Jones said of him, “I can’t emphasize enough what an exemplary teammate Zeke is, and I want to be real clear about that. In my mind, he’s what a football player is all about.”

Head coach Mike McCarthy weighed in on Elliott’s release:
“With Zeke’s success here [in the past], he’s earned this opportunity at his request,” said McCarthy, also elaborating on the thought process on the failed reunion. “… It was a conversation, and he asked for an opportunity to move forward and I think that’s clearly what’s in front of him.”
Initially, the plan was for the Cowboys to use a run-by-committee approach, led by Elliott and Rico Dowdle. McCarthy elaborated:
“I think if you just go through the season, we started this journey looking to be a running back by committee, and Rico clearly took the lead position,” McCarthy said. “And he’s ended up having a pretty productive year.”
Elliott cleared waivers and is officially a free agent able to sign with any team he chooses.
